Is This Normal?

I always notice that after driving my evo, i see heat waves coming from my vent. I always wonder if everyone else sees this on their car. i even walk up to the vent and i can just feel the hot air rising from the engine.

Yes. That's what it is there for. It is a heat extraction vent to keep the engine compartment cooler from the hot turbo.

I imagine once the weather gets cold and the windows start frosting/icing, the hood vent will be very helpful in clearing the windshield

One thing, I do wish I had a cover to cover up the hood vent when parked outside on rainy days. I know it wouldn't keep all the rain out, but it would help. Just something to lay inside the indentation where the vent is....

Heat vent is for venting heat.

Rain will not damage anything that gets wet from water entering the hood vent.

Over time I would imagine that things will start showing signs of rust due to the engine being rained on....

On photos of older Evos in Japan, I notice alot of rusted heat sheilds, bolts, etc... I can only assume it is because of rain.

Well considering the average outside temp right now is 80, and the turbo right below the Vent is 1600 degress, so do the math.

What happens when nice cold almost freezing rain falls on a searingly hot engine?

Doesn't metal tend to change size quickly, when heat is removed from it suddenly?
