RACE FUEL and BOOST

I am currently sitting on a decent pump gas tune. Evo 8 turbo w 10.5 hs w/FMIC supporting mods.

I am interested in running race fuel. I wondered if there is any gains by simply running the fuel and turning up the boost.

I am assuming I could run 110 unleaded mixed to around 100+. Currently set at 21 psi.

So basically can I turn the boost up to 25-26 on the good fuel?

Lets discuss running straight 110 and turning the boost on up to 28.

I am pretty new to the Evo and what it will handle. Not new to making cars fast. Previous car went 11.01 on a 150 shot of nitrous.

I have searched......tried several searches. I did not find the info I wanted.

Thanks for the advice.

FWIW I am aware that a tune using more timing would yield better results on race fuel. I am not looking to run it all the time. Looking for a extra bit of power on drag days.

You just answered your own question. Throw in some race gas, use ECU Flash and give your car a race gas tune.

Wow, that is a lot of juice. Do you run direct port? How much timing did you back out for that much N20?

It looks like he was talking about a 150 shot on his old car, which seems to be a Z28, not the Evo.

The 150 shot was on a V8 car.

As for a reflash. I am currently trying to source a lap top and the cable to do some tuning.

Till this time I was wondering if adding a mix of race fuel and adding boost would yield a noticable gain.

Also running straight 110 and going a littel higher on boost, would this be better for hp gains.

Thanks

The improvements in HP come from (1) getting the A/F ratio in optimum power range (2) increasing the timing, and (3) upping the boost. The combination of these three gives you the power. Better fuel just allows you more of a margin to do 1-3 without detonation. If you just add better fuel and turn up the boost, you'll get some additional power, but not nearly what you'd get with 1-3.

You should have the ability to know what your motor is doing -- not just guess. A wideband is essential, in my opinion, and some way to log your timing and A/F is very useful. It's way more fun to come home with a motor that still contains all the pistons and rods..

I do have a wideband in the car. As for logging timing......still greek with this. I know the wide band has logging as well.

Reason I am asking about a easy hp gain, I have a car that I raced and won. He wants to try it again. He got some better tires. I just want some cushion on the race.

Once I get the tuning and logging sorted out, I plan to make some changes to the car. I have got several COLD(winter) evenings coming This will be when I play around with the tuning side. For now I need a easy HP gain.

No need to run more than 100 octane on the stock turbo. It runs out of air after 6k rpm anyway. Spiking boost to 28psi on the stock turbo will broaden the powerband.

Put 2 gallons of 110 in 2 gallons of 93 and 1 gallon of E58. This will lean out your mixture, provide a healthy octane, and even help cool the charge a little.

Thanks please read my post's you will see that I am more then aware that tuning is going to net the best gains from race fuel.

I also know well enough that more boost increases Heat which causes detonation. Race Fuel is more resistant to the heat and will not pre ignite like a lower octane fuel. So hence running race gas JUST to combat the extra heat from turning up the boost.

I figured someone had experience with running it this way.

As soon as I get the equipment to tune with. I will have the ability to get the most from the race fuel. As well convenience of flashing different tunes.

On my stock turbo I went from a 11.9 to a 11.7 by just adding 110oct and bumping the boost from 22psi to 26psi. No changes in the tune or Im sure it would have been bigger gains.

Roughly 20 rwhp. That was basically what I was thinking it would be worth.

Thank You.
