don't wanna bust up this thread, but u did it, but what about the longevity of the factory springs/retainers being deminished by putting in cosworth cams, that cosworth says, need springs and retainers?

Or is it just upping the rev-limit you need these parts?

you said it sounds like a Subaru which tells me its running on 3 cylinders. Does the car misfire/run on 3 at idle or only under load? If possible, try unplugging each fuel injector one at a time. the engine should almost stall if it doesnt completely stall. If you unplug an injector and the engine does not stall or almost stall then your issue is on THAT cylinder.

You can then start doing testing on that cylinder to pinpoint the problem. try moving the injector to another cylinder, see if you can move the problem. Move the plug also. try another coil pack. Do a leakdown test on that cylinder.

Just make sure you change one variable at a time.

good luck
