Oil Temp (normal driving)
I need some help. What is the normal oil temp for the evo. My gauge gets pegged out at 300 and thats just around town. Is this something that I need to worry about??

I installed it way they told me to. I just wonder if the gauge wire I used has something to do with it? I installed my Defis and it read 180. I wonder if its the gauge? (autometer carbon)
where is the guage located? usually close the the filter should be around 180 to 200 at the highest and on long drives on the freeway shouldn't be anymore than 215. If your getting to 225 it means your racing and if it were to go anywhere above that your starting to melt your valves. 245 should be the caution to back down immediately and if it starts to go down your okay but if it doesn't then it's too late and youv'e hit cataclysmic failure.

I installed next to the oil filter and used draft42' adapeter. I unscrewed the old Defi sensor and pluged the autometer one in. I used 18 gauge wire like they said to do. Should I try a thicker wire from the sender to the gauge?
well if it's getting a signal at all it's not the wire. It could be an extra sensitive sending unit. That's usually the case with the 42draft design. My guess is change out the sending unit and make sure the fittings and everything are sealed up nice and tight then try again.

I am gonna run some test and see if its the sender. I didnt run the extra ground, due to the fact the instructions said that when you plug it into the engine it becomes grounded.

yes, do make sure that your ground is somewhere away from the sending unit but somewhere on the block, I believe I did mine on the intake manifold just below the strut bar and it worked fiine. good luck

I had a 2002 M3 and they frequently run at 250 degree oil temps flat out for hours on the track. Not even close to melting anything. The motor just keeps humming along for tens of thousands of miles under those conditions.

I just did some tests and it looks like the sender is bad. I turned the ignition on and undid the wire and put it on the oil filter housing and it read 300. so the gauge is working fine.
