most mechanics have a "rule of thumb", use gas form companies that end with "co" ... ie... shell/texaco, bp/conoco/aamaco etc... excluding CostCo, haha

The weights and measures do NOT check for octane. As a matter of fact there is no Federal or State agencies that check for octane. They check to make sure you are getting 1 gallon if you pay for a gallon and they also check for contaminents in the fuel. Sad for us, there is nobody checking the octane ratings.

Doing a test between all the different fuels is not something I want to do. It would depend on the crooked ***** who owns the gas station anyway and what he is actually putting in the tank.

I can tell you our local Sunoco and Shell both sell kick *** gasoline.
I believe in CA theres is a agency that measure octane. I could be wrong

evo nv, so use companies that end in "co"? Like Shellco, Sunoco, Marathonco, BPCO, but not Cosco? hahaha. I didn't realize Marathon or Shell ended in CO.

Evo Kid, Since California is by far the most screwed up state in this country you could be right, but I am betting against you.

Oklahoma tests gasoline at all of the stations and posts it on the pump with the date tested. These are the reasons we use 101 or gas-ina-barrel, it doesn't vary much.

It surprising.. unless its the walmart theory.. mass volume. low quality.. huge profits..
Not to turn this thread into a completely different beast, but if you shopped at a Wal-Mart, you would know that not ALL things in there are low quality. In fact, CHEAP does not always equal LOW quality (I thought I proved this with the Ebay exhaust manifold, but oh well). Besides, your analogy is off the mark. The Valero gas I put in my car was not cheap and it is not massively produced. It is 100 octane gas @ $5.99/gallon (I only put it in once a month) and I'll take it to my local mechanic to have it tuned, and it'll tell me whether it is worth it putting 100 octane in the tank every now and then. I'll post numbers when after I get tuned.

BTW, +1 to David for his Cali comment. I say we start a petition to annex that place away from the rest of the union.

Oh really? So Shell's 93 is good huh?!
Because the Shell's 91 in CA is crap.
76 and Chervon seems to be better than Shell gas.

Is it just this one Valero gas station or are you saying every Valero gas station sells bad fuel?

Ohio is one of only four states that does not have a statewide gas-quality testing program. The others are Alaska, Nebraska and Pennsylvania.

That means the rest of the states DO test Octane at the pump.

All fuel be it BP, Sunoco etc comes from the same distribution point. Octane that goes in the tank is blended by the pumps. If Valero, the company that has a monopoly on Ohio turnpike stations is cheating on its blends of premium then they should be proven and reported to the state.

So in these states it may make better sense to buy from a large seller that will be testing Octane of fuel they purchase to make sure THEY aren't getting ripped off.

The best thing Mr. Buschur can do is buy the gas and do the tests and call the media He'll get a lot of press for it.

Pump gas fuel variation is a huge issue for high performance turbo cars and a very good reason why it is important to make sure all tunes have a significant margin of saftey to afford for bad qualiy gas.

It is a fact that many gas stations are ripping off consumers

I have found that trying to partonize gas company owned stations helps to increase your odds at gettng a fresh and good quality tak of gas

Independant retailers seem to be less reliable

Cheapo off brands are mostly garbage - such as Costco - Valero - Quick Trip - etc etc

If you are trying to save a few cents with discount gas the Evo is not the car for you

I am trying to see how Valero is an off brand when they probably have about just as many stations in north america as shell and chevron maybe more? I use to use shell in houston and swore by it and I have now switched to valero same tune and before on shell i use to see random knock counts in 4th gear and now they are gone on the valero brand. I think it is more of where you buy the gas and the distributors rather than the actual brand because Valero is pretty dam big. As a matter of fact I tuned my car on a hot day at 21-22psi 10.9 - 11.1 afr and yesterday it got cold in houston around 30 - 40 degrees and my car hit 24.5psi (read from a mapsensor)to redline and no knock on valero gas, havent touched the tune since the hot weather.

i wouldn't go to wawa anymore if i were you... i went there not realizing they have 92 octane and not 93 anymore... I have been to 3 of them and confirmed it. But I can't speak for all of them. Just be careful
