Cam gears needed? Advantages?

I'm getting ready to do cams in the next week or 2 and I was wondering if its really worth it to get cam gears or should I save my money? It seems everyone does it while doing cams, but I just really don't see the advantages to em. I trust the majority of the opinions of the people on here, so let me know what you think. I'll be running GSC S1's if that makes any difference.

I don't think it's necessary especially with the GSC's. I spoke with Greg from GSC when I ordered mine and he told me that cam gears really don't make a big difference with the S1's. He advised me to save my money. Plus, you have the hassle of adjusting them and retuning and such. More money. My friend got a set and he now has them both adjusted to 0 / 0. No point.

Thanks for the reply. Thats what I thought. The only advantage I saw to them was you could physically "tune" your idle, but thats all I could see. As long as you have a good tuner than your idle should be fine.

If you've had your head or block machined it would be worthwhile to degree your cams to make sure they are installed per the cam manuf. specs. You can also move your cams around to change the power curve. I've found some decent power on certain cams retarding the intake a few degrees. We're talking 10-20whp at 600whp at redline. If you're drag racing it can help.

Here is a gsc s1 cam timing compare i did a while back when i was using a tme turbo on 91 octane. the man came by when i put the cams to 0/0....so i didnt get to try them @ 0/0 on the same night/ temps/fuel in the car.

I believe cam gears are worth more than just tweaking your idle....as all engines end up with a slighlty different setting do to multiple variables, crank gear broach, cam gear alignment hole, cam variences, crank shaft broach, istance between cams on the head, deck heoght of the block, distance from theh bottom of the cam journal to fire-face distance, just to name a few.

here is my calculated whp compare. FYI, my calculated whp #'s were within +/- 1 whp from a local dyno jet thast i use.... so the peak numbers are fairly close

^^^ Thats actually pretty impressive. I'm not ever going to go 600hp, but I've got a FPGreen sitting at my house back in GA, so that will be installed along with the cams, FMIC and everything else when I get back to Reno. I may have to look into doing the gears.
