Unhappy Oil leaking from my exhaust mani gasket

Ya, this sounds ridiculous, but its happening. I know, I know, oil shouldnt be there, Im no noob to working on cars, believe me on that one, but w*f?? Bad rings seems to be the first impression, but then again, Im makin great power....Any other suggestions than just a compression test? (just noticed this a few days ago, and havent had time to look into it). Anythings appreciated, thanks

hmm, do you have a catch can/s? you can see how much blow by you are getting from there. Are you blowing out the dip stick? I would just run a leak down test on all the cylinders. Seems off, are you sure that the oil is coming from the mani gasket???

Bad exhaust valve seal would cause oil to leak into the exhaust manifold. Bad rings would put the oil into the combustion chamber and be burned resulting in smoke, not visable oil.

Edit: After thinking about it again and reading Nez136's post; If you are getting a lot of blow-by and there is something up with your PCV valve (maybe catch can if you have one) it might be enough pressure to push the oil past the valve seals. I would tend to think that your dip stick would be poping out and you would have blown your valve cover gasket by then though.

Could the oil be leaking from the valve cover gasket? Or is it exhaust 100%?

Agree on testing more.

Positive. It rests on my manifold flange. I just had the head completely redone tho, valve seals and all.... Hmmmmm. And yes, I do have a catch can

Bad oil seals on the turbo? What does it look like when you take off the inlet pipe to the compressor housing?

Edit: Just realized you said exhaust manifold. Does your exhaust manifold leak exhaust gases? Pretty sure oil shouldn't be able to leak from it if exhaust gases aren't leaking from it... Oil spraying from the catch can vent?

Its clear its from the exhaust mani. I have a mynes tubular mani, and inbetween the runners, the flange swoops down. The oil is accumulating there. Catch can is on intake mani side (in front of alternator).

Get oil dye and UV light. Going to have to find the source.

Oil drain line from the turbo possibly? Can you take any pictures of the area?

Do you think that oil will actually stay in a liquid form if it was leaving the combustion chamber into the exahust manifold? Negative.

Check the exahust manifold studs, pretty sure at least one or two of them protrude into an oil gallery of some sort.

Old thread, I know. But it seems I'm having the same situation.

I think I've got an exhaust leak from where the exhaust manifold attaches to the engine. It seems like there is a bit of oil sitting on the top of the flange of the exhaust manifold...

What'd you find out?

When you got everything redone, Did they check or replace the rings? There shouldn't be that much oil coming out of your exhaust mani gasket where you can actually see it. Also like someone said before, did they replace the valve seal or just try to "refurbish it". If your getting work done make sure you know your stuff before taking it to the shop and not assume they know what they're doing.
