oil level.
hey i just done my oil change last night and wanted to know if its okay to overfill the oil tank by 1/8" over the max line.
While i was filling up the oil with only 4 quarts it was a little over half... then after that i added another half quart it just went up 1/8" over the max line.
i just wanted to know if its okay or not. let me know thanks.

i'd just take the 3 minutes of your time to pull the excess out. the fill range on the dipstick is there for a reason, i don't think that little of an amount would do anything catastrophic, but do you want to risk it? at the most i could see it maybe robbing a tiny bit of power due to the increased windage.

the amount your speaking of isnt something to freak out about. by overfilling I don't mean a hair or two above the hash mark. lest say you have filled it almost a quart over (3/4)...i'd drain some out to be on the safe side. serious overfilling will cause the excess oil, which is being churned up in the sump by the crankshaft, can vaporise and be forced up into the combustion chamber, there the vapors will explode instead of burn and start some destruction. when overfilled seals may start to leak usually main seals or oil pan gasket. it can cause foaming and airation in the oil at higher RPM.
on a diesel overfill can cause a run away engine or loss of control of RPM. this is cause the engine is running on its own engine oil thru the engine breather system or intake system. this isnt something you want to happen if you dont have a manual way to shut down the engine like an air shutdown.
there isnt really a reason to overfill. always let the engine sit for 5-10 after you run it, check it. add a small amount check again...give it time to drain down from the head. if your changing oil add 3.5 or 4 qts then check your level, always account for the oil you put in your filter.
does anyone know the exact amount from min to max on the dipstick? 1 qt?
