New Evo.... HKS problem.

Hey everyone, i was hoping that maybe you guys can help me out. I just bought an 03 Evo VIII, I have been reading up and doing my research on here about as much as possible, so when i found that my new car has the common idle because of the hks bov being vta i turned here for an answer. I ordered the recirc kit to try and do away with that problem, but upon further looking at it i noticed that my hks is in a wierd location and the stock bov is still on with no vacuum hose on it. They welded the hks flange to the charge pipe that goes from the back of the engine down to the intercooler. I am trying to figure out why and how i can fix what they did because i don't know exactly, but am sure i probably have a huge leak. Any help would be a great help... thanks guys.

Your best bet would be to get rid of that BOV altogether. You can sell the BOV and use the money to buy a new EVO9 stock BOV which is more than enough and it will make the car drive like stock.

At this point you have described a welded on HKS SSQ in addition to the stock recirc BOV which makes no sense.

Post a pic so we know WTF your talking about. HKS also makes 100s of parts for Evos so please be more specific.

It might help to go to show and shine and look at the engine bay thread to see what the various possible configurations look like.

OK. after re-reading I think I got it. You have some choices...

1. pull out the stock BOV from the intake (MAF) tube and recirc the SSQ BOV into it.
2. replace the upper IC pipe with a stocker and recirc the stock BOV into it.
3. plug the BOV hole in the intake pipe (not with unplugged stock BOV) and keep the SSQ VTA (vented to atmosphre) and buy a HKS "EIDS". Cheap small part that doesn't really work that great that modifies the MAF signal going to the ECU to stabilize idle, etc. Or change engine managment to speed density and lose the MAF altogether.

Seeing as you are very new to the site I would suggest using the search tool because there is a lot of old information on the HKS SSQV. But I think you will find most people will tell you to go with a dual port or full recirculating valve. The HKS is just bad on the EVO with stock ECU.

yeah it is an HKS super sequential with a welded flange to the upper intercooler pipe , but they never removed the stock bypass. i just don't know if i try to recirc the valve what i should do about all the connections and if i can run ok with the welded position.

Sounds like you need to get another stock charge pipe and maybe the hose that connects the stock valve to the charge pipe.

Put the old charge pipe & HK$ up for sale together to offset the cost of the new pipe and prob some change. Some yahoo will buy it.

I see ppl selling the upper aluminum pipe often (usually cheap) in the "for sale" section.

Wingless, what he has described is is correct. The previous owner left the factory recirc setup in place, spun the factory bypass around so that it is in backwards a la compressor surge style, and had a HKS SSQV flange welded to the side directly above the intake pipe. The vacuum line is run to the HKS valve and there is no vacuum line on the factory valve. It's the dumbest thing I have ever seen on an Evo thus far.

Yeah not retarded, just ignorant lol. Knew that it was setup really stupid, but just haven't seen the setup enough to be able to make heads or tails of it.

If the factory BOV is turned backwards, flip it around and hook the vac line back up to it. Tee into the vac line that goes to the HKS. You will be running two BOVs at this point and will reduce the amount of air that gets VTA and will reduce the problems you have.
