I just got this code too on my IX. On evoscan it shows "speed sensor (24)". I was attempting to have my car tuned by a friend and it kept throwing CELs. After hassling with it for 2 days I gave up and put my stock tune back on..... I hate to say it but, problem solved. No more CELs... All he tuned me for is a 4 bar map sensor and my Grimmspeed 3 port ebc along with catless tbe.

sorry for reviving old thread but im getting the p0500 error on my CJ VR 2009 and just took it to dealer and they say its the engine ECU and going to cost $2095 to replace. Is this correct??

Bringing this thread back to life. Did you get to fix this? I'm having the exact issue. I have tested all wires going to the harness, grounds, changed sensor, even changed the pigtail on the connector for the speed sensor. My AEM isnt reading any speed, nor is my speedo or odo working. I am totally out of options besides to burn the car.

Does your Check Engine light work? The fuse that powers the Vehicle speed sensor also powers that light. Fuse #2 (7.5A) under the dash (Pretty sure anyway).

So just an update. I found out my specific issue. So my ecu would not read the proper speed. It would either read 0 or 255mph. Throwing off the 2-step and boost by gear. The issue is within the gearbox where the sensor gear is either not making proper contact with the gear inside the gearbox or its faulty. I ruled out the sensor gear by taking it out of the tranny and spinning it by hand. The ecu read it perfectly.

Heads up, the speed sensor sits in a pocket on top the transmission, a pocket usually containing sand and small rocks. Pull the sensor without blowing out the pocket first and whatever collected in the sensor pocket is now in the transmission.
