Question HELP! VSS/p0500 mystery

IDK whats going on with my evo but I need help!

Problems:
P0500 code
Does not log miles
Does not log speed accurately when the speedo actually does move
The speedo needle bounces around when it actually wants to try to work
Speedo rests at 0 mph 99% of the time

I've swapped the actual VSS, swapped the little white cog/gear/wheel thing under the VSS.

What else should I check for?

Does the bolt flange on the VSS sit flush against the transmission?

I'd have to check but is this a common mistake? Would it cause for the VSS to fluctuate and throw codes?

I wrote about this in another section. The motor mount behind the VSS is of strange construction, a plate on the transmission, a bracket on the plate and then the rest of it. Anyway the plate and the bracket in total are attached with five bolts. The five bolts look to be the same length but they aren't. Get one of the longer bolts in the wrong hole, and, like I say, the difference is small, and either you can't insert the VSS or if the sensor is already installed the bolt hits it.

The location I'm talking about is the one you can see when looking down into the pit where the VSS lives. BTW, that pit traps gravel over time so compressed air and a blow gun is needed before pulling the VSS. Otherwise gravel in the transmission.

I'm not saying that this is your problem but its something I ran into.
