Humidity and temp...

Well...my Evo is an awesome car, and it seems damn fast. So I decided to test it at the track last night for friday night street racing.

The temperature was around 87 for my first run at 7:15 and my last run at 10:30 was 80 or so. Now, this was at 90-100% humidity, it had called for rain all day and it didn't rain a drop. So it felt like 120 degrees!

This was my third time at the track, and by far my most consistent and best runs ever!

BUT...I COULDN'T RUN 13's!

My car: Stock with a clutch that smells like dead animals
The track: really average bad traction

I did 7 runs, aprox 5 minutes between each run average...

slipping at around 5k rpms...first shift at 6k...2-3 and 3-4 at 6.5

Example...
r/t: 5.27
60: 1.9
1/4: 14.2

The guy a ran against had a 1G GSX, with visible mods like full exhaust, full gauges and a front mount BIGGER THAN MINE!...
I pulled on him the whole way! I also beat a B18 turbo...
He ran a 14.4...

So, was it the humidity/temp combined with my clutch? Do I suck at driving? How much does humidity affect our cars?

[this thread is not about drag racing, so please keep it in the tech engine forum]

5 Evos ran last Sunday at National Trail Raceway outside Columbus, Ohio. 85° and very humid. Cars that ran 12.7 previously couldn't do better than 13.2. Weather is a huge factor on turbo-charged cars.

I may have these numbers wrong, so don't flame me if I do, but I remember reading somewhere that:

1) every 3 degrees Celcius reduces power by 1%

2) every 10% humidity reduces power by 1%. There are two opposing factors here, because humidity displaces oxygen, but also delays the onsite of detonation. I'm guessing that the car will not detonate under any circumstances, and this number only takes into consideratino the oxygen displaced

These figures were for naturally aspirated cars.

Buddy, even if your numbers are wrong, no flames here. How could I do that to an Evo VI owner!

Barametric pressure also has a big affect on performance, if there was rain comming it was probably very low (not good for performance). What was your trap speed?

As the day went on, my speeds went down... Probably because my last three runs had less than 5 minutes of cool down. I couldn't muster 100. My best was 98...with my last run a 14.1 at 96mph! Im not the best driver...but I this was by far the best I had run. I had 4 60f'ts in a row under 2.0 and 4 r/ts in a row around .6...

By no way is my opinion any the least bit technical, but I've noticed via butt dyno that the cars performance is down on humid days. Mind you in Maine we don't have very many humid days, so it's really noticeable when we do.

I wonder what are friends in Miami feel about their cars in the constant heat/humidity that they have down there.

Car and Driver corrects their figures based on barometric conditions. I believe a 14.1 will =13.6 in optimal conditions. Evos and Stis did pretty well last night at Fontana. Temps weren't optimal but better then it has been in previous weeks. Run your car at sea level on a cool crisp night and bust a 13.4. Fall is coming soon and times will be better and our cars will be alot more fun to drive. OUT!

Humidity has a HUGE effect on tubro cars performance, especially on cars like the Evo which have a MAF sensor. Cars that are MAP basedm, while still effected, are not hurt as dramatically as MAF equipped cars.
