Ted,

What do you say is the best setting for the cams?

I have a stock turbo.

Eric.

Id say adjust them on the dyno. Try a couple of combinations (Im sure your tuner would understand you trying to make the best power possible).

I like the S1s timed just the way they are. If one were going to test it on the dyno I'd play with 0/-1 and -3/0, which should give very different results.

Ted,

so your opinion is put them in and use the oem camgear and not the adjustables?

For a street-driven car with factory sized turbo, I'd say yes. Just put them in and go.

With Comp Cams 280s, I'd to -2/-2. They are too advanced for best power.

Ted B,

For evo 9 stock turbo and S1s, do you recommend getting cam gear for exhaust cam? I have been told I don't need it since the tuner can adjust the MIVEC for low end power, which is what I want.

I can't answer that question unless I know the centerline of the S1 intake cam when at the '0' advance position. You'll have to ask Greg what it is.

Thank you, I'll try that, as I have -4/-2 today.

No, because we do not know what "variable CL" equates to at the '0' MIVEC position.

Thumbs up

TedB,

I have the same question as hytek. Since the intake can be ecu controlled on a IX, and it looks like the exhaust has a 113 cl, what's your best guess as to exhaust cam timing for a IX for best midrange power? Someone was running -2 exhaust timing but had a green so it's not comparable with the stock IX turbo. Thanks!

MIVEC can only advance the intake cam. It cannot retard it past '0' (the base position).

Ideally, the IX intake cam should be ground at the most reasonably retarded CL that it would be deemed useful, simply because we can advance it from that point to wherever we want with our MIVEC map. If it is ground at a setting that is not retarded enough for peak power, it's ok, but will leave a bit of power on the table, because as I said, MIVEC cannot retard past '0'.

This is why I say that it is impossible to advise possible optimum exhaust cam settings if we do not know where the intake cam CL is at the '0' position. Two cams work with respect to each's others position. If one does not know the timing of one, he cannot possibly advise on the timing for the other.

I can't guess. I don't know and have no idea. Only the individual who grinds the cams knows where he set the intake CL at the base position.
