help with engine knock on startup

For a couple weeks now I have had what sounds like rod knock noise for the first couple of seconds after a cold startup. After the first couple of seconds the car runs perfect with no issues at all. I have changed the oil and spark plugs to see if anything would change but its still the same. It doesn't seem to be hurting anything and I'll wait until it gets worse before taking further action. The oil level is perfect and is checked every week. I use amsoil SSO 0W30 for oil and a mitsu oil filter. Since this has occured I have been to a track day and many autocrosses and has not gotten any worse. Anyone else have the same issue?

Is it actually knock (did you set up your CEL to show knock)? Or just sound like it? Is it vibrations, like from solid motor mounts? How's your oil pressure on startup?

It sounds like knock but not sure if it was. I am waiting for my logging cable from evoscan to further diagnose the problem but want to see if there are things I can look at first. The CEL has not been modified to blink for knock.

The only thing I can think of is that you are not getting proper oil pressure on startup, and your are hearing it tick because of it. Not sure if that is the case or not, just the only thing I can think of. Do you have an oil pressure gauge? If not, I recommend getting one.

If it only does it upon cold startup then it may be piston slap. How many miles on the engine? Try switching to 10W/30 oil.

Engine has 60K. I did it on 10W30 and I just switched to 0W30 the last oil change.

Exactly how long does this knocking sound last after startup? It happened on a 2-Liter inline four BMW engine of mine that had a rebuilt bottom end. It was loudest at idle right upon startup, then the knocking would diminish as the engine warmed. After 60 seconds, or so, there was no more tapping sound. That particular rebuilt motor lasted me 100K. Mine was piston slap. Have you listened for it with a stethoscope?

It lasts for less than 10 seconds and its not overly loud but noticeable. Its similar to a washing machine on the spin cycle. I have used a stethescope but only when the motor was warm when the sound was not there and it sounded fine. I need someone to start the car while I listen with the stethescope before the noise goes away.

Yes, that is what an oil pressure gauge does, shows you the actual oil pressure. It is definitely worth it.
