No they aren't, I've had both in my possession side by side. If they were interchangeable, don't you think alot of people would be upgrading their VIII turbos to IX spec by swapping comp. housings? I attached the best pic I can find showing the larger diameter where the compressor housing meets the CHRA.

Just to clarify also, didnt read everything word for word, but the compressor wheel size is the same on both the VIII and IX turbos, but the IX comp housing is larger...

all flanges and threads are housing the same just a different coolant line bolted to the comp housing and a different outlet on the housing has a lil different angle aswell so it doesnt go into the starter if put on a earlier model.

I think this is more then you needed but wanted to be clear with everything
