I have this same problem, my oil light come on every now and then. It flickers and stuff. I got this loud ticking also. Speeds up and slows down when I drive. So I was also told I spun a bearing.
I knew this would happen, I am pushing 550 on the stock block so it finally happened. I bought a beater DD to drive until I have the money to do it the right way and make a beast for the streets here in Colorado.

still nothing. I took the head/oil pan off and found nothing abnormal. The pistons/rods look good. the bearings are also still in good condition. A little scoring but nothing that concerns me. I cant find where the rattle came from. When the motor was running, I found out it was cyclinder 2. As soon as i unhooked the spark from cyclinder 2 (pulled spark plug wire out) the sound went away. Im going to pull the short block out this weekend. With the head/ oil pan off, Whats the easiest way to pull the short block out. Can i leave the trans/transfer case in the car? Or do i have to pull it out with trans. Thanks for feedback guys.
Same thing happened to me. Got on it and threw off the drive belt (serpintine). Thought it was my head cause drive belt connected to water pump and was making noise in the head. It's the bearings, and what you are describing happened to me...I stopped and had it towed home(thank you AAA 100 miles).
is it possible to change bearings without taking the engine out? is there a how to for this? Or is it not advised to do this cause the bearingmaterial could be gone anywhere in the engine?? I have a light knocking noise, not sure how bad it is.
