2wd evo.. wtf happened?

Like the title says my evo is no longer awd.. ONLY the front wheels spin, on a launch. Smoke is more like it, on a nearly stock evo. If I do a hard 1/2 shift you can still hear the rear diff clunk but not nearly as hard or loud as it normally would.

sounds like you have a blown center diff. Time to send it to Shep for an RS or Quaife cinter diff upgrade.

ouch lol do the rears even drive? i would lift the car up with jack stands and be careful with this as i've tried it before, lift it with jackstands all 4 corners and put it in first and see if the rear wheels even drive. I WARN YOU YOU ONLY EVEN NEED TO HIT 2MPH TO TEST THIS lol.

I have not checked yet but I would have to say yes they do. It seem to suddenly work every now and again. I was able to do a donut on the wet pavement.

Its the center diff. You blew the teeth off the open diff gears. I did the same thing. The car will drive but then it will make horrible noises when you turn or hit boost and the teeth will slip. The noises you hear are when its missing teeth and then catching onto the next one.

That's just it.. I'm not getting any noises or sounds. Only way we knew something was wrong was because the car suddenly was doing insane fwd burn outs.

I had the same problem with my III, very iffy about where and which tires the power goes to.

I had a really loud clunk in the rear only when i turn and slightly when i luanch changed the rear diff and it was perfect. now i have the same problem but with the front, so my car is RWD alot more fun than FWD or 4WD 270+ hp in a RWD evo is more than enough to drift donut and smoke out the scene. But now i having to take her down and change the front diff.

Almost a gaurentee that its the rear diff or possibly the center diff.

I drove the car myself, and it seems just like a FWD car. My first guess was the Spider gears in the center diff.

What about the gears in the Front Diff, is that a possibility?

The front diff is inside the tranny and extremely unlikely. Its almost a certain that its the transfer case.

I need to pick up a slide hammer tonight and then I will finish pulling the spider gears and report back my findings.

Correct! The front diff is in the T case.

Adding to that.. My front diff is in great shape. No broken spider gears. Ok so that leaves the center diff in the trans or the rear diff to be my problem.
