Aem Pencil Coil

Hi guys, wondering if anyone is using the pencil coil from Aem?

Considering to get it for my E9 so all feedbacks & comments welcomed.

Thanx

Victor

I'm using them at the moment in my Evo. For now they are working out great, switched after I blew up a couple 300m coil that you see alot of Evo and DSM's use. I'm using an M&W Pro14 as well with the setup.

From a really trusted source in the industry compared them to the Denso pencil coils from Honda Motorcycles (954rr), and said they are not near the quality (China made). I have had great success with the Denso coils on Honda applications, hoping these will actually hold up like the Denso's; if not I will go to a set of Denso's off a Honda.

These do aleviate the need for an extra coil cover that is needed with the 300m coils, and you can still use the factory one with them as well if you like.

Honda 954rr pencil coils fits directly into the E9's engine?

Either the Denso or Aem pencil coils, do i wire them up directly to the Aem Ems?

Thanx

Never tried to fit the 954rr pencil coils to the 9. I do however know the short pencil coil from AEM fits the 8 just fine. I would have to measure the length of the Denso vs both the short and long versions of the AEM to give an accurate assumption of which is best.

Both the Denso and AEM coils are "dumb" coils, which is they don't have an a built in ignitor. Thus you can't run them directly from the AEM.

From what i know, the short pencil coil fits the Evo9 as well.

So i gotta wire up the dumb coils to a CDI? Will the HKS DLI2 work or i gotta get the Aem Twin fire?

Thanx alot!

Yes denso or aem coils need to be wired to a CDI or ignitor. The DLI 2 will not work with them, this is an spark amplifier for a coil that already has an ignitor built in.

Hmm... ...so will the Aem Twin Fire work with the pencil coils?

I was thinking on wiring my DLI2 to a DSM Ignitor and the Ignitor to the 300m or AEM coils.

Is that possible?

I guess end of the day the Sparktech non-cdi COP would simply solve all issues & doubts... ...but at a higher cost... ...

Tried finding out more info on the pencil coils on the Aem forum but to no avail. Emailed the Aem tech guys, no reply too

I've been digging around for quite some time also and I stumbled in over here at evolution.net after someone suggested that my old school chrysler turbo may use similar components as the newer engines.

I never really post in forums because of much of the bollogna that goes on but I thought you guys might be interested in this. Apparently these guys make true C.O.P.S. for CDI and inductive systems and several 1000+hp domestic engines are running with them. www.weaponxperformance.com

In any case hope that helps you guys in some fashion. I think I'm going to try them out, apparently they are really good quality.

Those weaponx coil on plugs look just like the Aem ones. Maybe they are the same.

It doesn't look like it. I tried out both the AEM and WeaponX stuff and the construction is quite different between the two. The AEM stuff is definitely made from different materials and has a different construction / connection point. Overall I liked the WeaponX stuff best but they do cost more.

Also, between talking it seems the biggest difference between the two companies are their stances on which coils work best on which ignition systems.

I asked my CDI ignition seller, M&W, about these AEM coils and their response was:

"Our customers are reporting very mixed results when using these coils. If you have difficulties we would suggest you buy the original Denso pencil coils (which is what AEM tried to copy when designing their coil) as these work exceptionally well"
I hope the AEM ones work since I already bought them...

Delphi pencil coils were plugged on "Two Guys Garage on SPEED":

How do they compare to the Denso pencil coils?
