Patrick, Thanks for the heads up. I now have good hard evidence in regards to the noise. I can hear the whine as well in 5th gear under deceleration. It's very audible. I have taken it to a few dealerships around and they seem dumbfounded by the sound. They can't really commit to it specifically because the noise is only during deceleration. Some say that it's the load. I seriously doubt this.

I did however try to tell them that it could be a possible worn part in the TC or front Diff. Now, w/ this heads up of your, hopefully they can take my word for it that it's the ring and pinion part in the TC. I think these parts are not sold separately by Mitsu and would need to purchase the whole TC?

Anyhow, pm me w/ your contact number so that I could further discuss w/ you my cars current situation.

Your reply to this post is greatly appreciated. Hope to hear from you soon.

Oh, it's stock w/ about 15k miles and all fluids have been replaced.

I ended up sending the TC to Shep and he tore it down and said that the ring&pinion were worn and needed to be replaced.

Ended up getting the Stage II rebuild w/ new ring/pinion but could not afford the Quaife LSD at this time so i'm sticking with the oem unit.

Well at least i know that my gut instinct was right and now on to getting the car back together to make some passes next month WOOHOO!

Hope this helps anyone else out there that may have the same problems i had....

Here's a good sound clip found on Youtube. There's a few on there, but this one should suffice.

I think I have a similiar problem to yours. I have a loud decel noise that only happens in like 5th and 6th on decel from about 70-45mph. It only happens when the clutch is engaged too. Wasn't if it was my ring and pinion it would make noise with the clutch depressed or not? I am hoping I am just low on fluid and need to change it.

I just wanted to chime in with my specifics. That flash video is spot on to what I am experiencing.

I have an 03 and when decelerating (in gear) I hear that noise when I'm in roughly in the 3k down to 2k rpm range. But not at other rpms. Someone described it as "coins rattling in a coffee can" and that's a fair statement.

I've had it for awhile but it's tough to find info on what it may be. THis is probably the best thread I've come across. I appreciate all of the info and post.

Glad this post helped shed some light on the matter. Coins in a coffee can are pretty much spot on.

I was in the process of trying to sell my Evo. Looks like I have something else to fix before I sell her. Story of my life with this car.....

I have this similar noise, only with no load on the car "decel", when I give it any peddle at all it goes away, I have a Exedy triple carbon. I also have some bad peddle vibration on the clutch when just having my foot rest on it. But I have solid motor mounts (and i mean solid) and solid rear diff with AMS mustache eliminate.

By no load you mean clutch peddle down? See mine from 2K down is the most noticeable coins in a can rattling but I dont really from the higher RPM's because I always shift. Any help would be appreciated but I am leaning towards the TOB so that's my idea.

Well my clutch peddle also vibrates so Im trying to figure out those 2 issues.. not sure if they are related. if it is all just a TOB then im not to worryed ill wait till it pops off and switch to the push type LOL

There is no way that is the TOB.

My story goes as follows:

Bought the car from a "buddy" with 7500 miles on the clock. Noise was there when I bought it. The car was equipped with an Exedy Hyper Single and was told that is what is causing the noise.

Took it to a reputable shop before the purchase and they also confirmed it was the clutch.

Since I did not and do not track my cars I decided to go with an less noisy clutch. I took that out and went with and Exedy Stg2. The TOB was replaced as well as the clutch.

Guess what? Noise still there. I have already upgraded the rear diff with a unit from TRE, and i'm pretty sure according to Patricks post, his Shep transfer case cured his woes.

I'm willing to bet it's the TC. I just got to get around to putting mine in.
