5 spd. vs. 6 spd.

hey guys I'm new here but evos have been my favorite car for 2 or 3 years now finally growing up a little and actually planning to buy one within the next 6 months or so. I have a question that seems to be debated quite often. what exactly is the pros and cons of the 6 spd. ? is there a huge diference? what can I expect from both and should I make it a big deal to choose one over the other. I really don't like the X but love the IX and VIII. is the mr worth the extra money? the car will be my DD and I will probably get on it quite often. all of my friends have camaros with v8s that I plan on smoking. sorry for any questions that might be nooby. I already looked over the newb thread and coudln't find anyhting about the 5 vs. 6. any help greatly apreciated. thanks guys.

well you didnt do a very good job searching because this topic has been discussed numerous amounts of time. long story short, if its your DD and you dont plan on going passed 350whp then 6spd. Better gas mileage especially on the highway. But if you plan on modding the eff out of it, 5 spd. The 6 spd tranny is weaker than the 5 spd. If you have the money, buy the MR.

I did a couple of searchs but I didn't want to keep waiting 15 seconds over and over again. I appreciate the reply though. that's pretty much the exact answer I was looking for.

My only suggestion for you then is to try to develop a "good" straight to the point phrase to search and just "search" through the pages of threads... or else you WILL be flamed every time on here because topics like this have been BEATEN to death!

- to answer your question...

I personally have an MR and I regret buying one every second.. It has just not been worth it in the long run for the amount of good money I paid for it.. Everything I had on the car that was "MR" related has been upgraded (Example: BBS wheels, Bilstein Suspension, weak 6 speed junk transmission, special aluminum shift knob, MR badge lol, factory 3 gauges, etc).. The only thing that is still on the car from the MR is obviously the aluminum roof, vortex generator, and shift console..

6 speed does fine if you don't beat the heck out of the car and have a ton of power ~450awhp.. but the 5 speed is just all around so much better and 2x stronger!

My advice is to try both of them and see what happens. No one can tell you what you want or need. The thing i considered when i got my evo IX gsr was that when i drove the 6 speed, it didn't feel as fun because it felt like the turbo comes and go so fast you don't get to enjoy it. Also why don't you just use the extra money you save to put it into some mods instead? you might like the evo even more.

could be wrong, but i believe the mr has the same transmission case as a gsr but with an extra gear stuffed in there.
but over all 5 spd anyday. better for modding. and the mr trannys r weak

The MR has a better suspension that the gsr, if you get a change test drive both. My personal opinion is that the GSR will do just fine, that is the one I have and I love it.

thanks for all the replies guys. It sounds like the 5 spds are overall a better tranny. I drive on the highway about 15 miles to work though so the 6 speed might come in handy for that.

Yes they are the same case, the 6 spd has gears 4-5-6 in the same volume of space as 4-5 in the 5 spd. The gears are thinner and are therefore not as strong when large amounts of power are applied or long track runs. 4th gear is the biggest issue being thinner but used quite often when tracking. The mileage issue is brought up often, however, I do not believe there is much credence to the argument as both transmissions have similar final drive ratios and will cruise at similar engine speeds having a rather negligible difference in fuel economy. Regardless, the average Evo owner is not going to care about 22mpg vs 22.5mpg and if they do, they will modify their driving behavior to achieve improved mileage. Bottom line, the 5spd is an all around better investment for 95% of Evo buyers.

they are not the same case i assure you, try doing a clutch in a 5 speed then do 1 in a 6 plus the 6 speed is finned the 5 is not, there is a way to modify the 6 speed into a 5 speed i personally know sumone running this, sheppard does it

If you want to be technical, no they are not identical cases, however, implicit in the fact that you can modify (without some sort of astronomical cost) a 6spd into a 5spd is that they are internally very similar. The point is, 1 case with 6 gears leaves less space for each gear than the same 1 case divided between 5. Even if the cases varied wildly in design, the packaging space for the unit is the same in either car. The 6spd is inherently weaker when comparing the two transmissions.

I am no transmission tech (and I am guessing you are not either), but what do you mean the 6spd is finned? Do you mean the case has fins molded into the design for the purposes of cooling?

simple answer

the six speed cannot handle (as well as the five speed)

-a significant amount of power over stock
-road racing conditions (due to extreme heat in 4/5/6)
