Hks T51r

ok so this won't be happening anytime soon but i'm going to probably run a t51r (most likely the KAI, but i may go SPL) on my car in the far future because i like to piece together kits rather than buy as a whole...i'm more of a diy guy and, unfortunately, i have hks-itis and the fanboy in me is telling me what to do

so my questions are:

1) are there any current evo's running this turbo setup? i know there were some in the past but not sure what's become of them

2) how does this compare with a 42r? spool/power/reliability/etc

3) i realize this is a large turbo so would i be able to run a tubular mani with this? if so, what kind would fit

4) what kind of modifications (ie. to the frame, radiator, any shaving, etc), if any, will i need to make to be able to run this

thanks in advance

I know that this was a real baller setup on rx7's, but there some new turbos that you might check into. The hta86 and the gt850r are just two of them. Both are capable of 700hp.

the CHRA on the kai and spl are the same ones as a 70mm and 74mm Garrett 42R. HKS just puts their housings on them and their fancy bullet style nut on the compressor wheel. Then they jack the price a grand or so, save yourself a LOT of money and just buy a 42R or even a Borg S372.

so the spool isn't any different? there's a bunch of people on the supra forums who swear by this turbo because it outputs the same as a 42r, if not more, and it spools much faster

anybody have any experience with these on an evo?

The KAI has a slightly different turbine side than a 42R, but thats about it.

ask mynes performance.. i think they are using a SPL on their drag car...

but guys are right essentially same thing as a 42r HKS uses their own housings... bad azz turbo tho... just a little outdated. I think HKS has a new turbo the gt62r or something that is the replacement..but it is VERY LARGE..

k i'll ask them...since it is similar to the 42r, i'll be getting full spool at high 5000's? low 6000's? i was under the assumption that it spooled much faster than the standard 42r

30-33psi by 6000-6300rpm on a 70mm 42R (2.0L) 4cyl engine is about the norm. Good boost control make a huge difference in how these big turbos spool. You can forget about a manual controller if you are wanting something other than a full on drag car thats on kill 100% of the time
