I’ve been reading though the forums for a while now trying to learn about upgrade paths and determine what the best path is for me to take. I was trying to get as educated as possible before asking any questions. This forum has an astounding amount of information. Every time that the server goes down I think to myself “oh crap” and get fearful that all the information’s vanished into the crashed computer void.
Anyway, I know it’s all pretty much basic bolt-ons, but I’m hoping that by planning ahead, I’ll avoid having to redo anything. I think I’m at the point where it’s time to post up what I’m planning to do and hopefully get some feedback from the people that really know what they’re talking about (i.e. not me).
My goals are more focused toward road racing and weekend twisties rather than drag racing. Additionally, this car will continue to be my daily driver, so I don’t want to go too extreme. I’ll attack suspension and brakes mods outside of this thread along the way, but here is my current plan for power upgrades. The mods listed are in the general order that I am planning to put them in. I grouped some of them that I plan to install together at the same time to save on time and money.
So, here’s the list. If there is anything missing, wrong, overkill, underkill, or if I'm just flat out misinformed about what I’m doing or the direction I'm going, I would love to know.
Or, if anyone has any general opinions about my current plan, I’d love to hear them too. I’m certainly open-minded to changing things, so I appreciate any thoughts or critiques. Thank you everyone for your time and help!
I have an ’06 Evo IX non-MR
Current Mods:
3) ARP Head Studs
4) HKS RS Intake
5) Clutch (this may get done earlier or later in the list, I’m not really sure yet)
8) Turbo and Related Mods

The one open question that I’m still looking into is what cams to run and at what point to put them in. I still have more research to do on this one. This thread (https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...mit-power.html) has some great info, but I need to gather more info and opinions about drivability and idle issues with the (relatively) more aggressive cams.
So that's the plan. Thank you again for any help or opinions you can offer. Is there anything that I can log or keep track of as I go through installing all of the mods that would be helpful to people on the board?

b) SS Clutch Line
6) Intercoolerb) SS Clutch Line
a) ETS 3.5” FMIC – No modification needed of the crash bar or bumper and this seems to be the best bang for your buck in the name brand FMICs.
b) ETS 2.5” Upper and Lower IC piping – 3” piping seemed like overkill for my planned sized turbo
c) Diverter Valve/Recirculating BOV – not VTA. To hold higher boost. Upper piping flange may depend on DV choice. Not sure which one yet. I need to do more research here
7) FIC 1050 Injectors – Should have enough headroom for race fuel or e85 if/when I run them on the trackb) ETS 2.5” Upper and Lower IC piping – 3” piping seemed like overkill for my planned sized turbo

8) Turbo and Related Mods
a) FP Red Turbo – Good spool, plenty of power for my goals and seems like the best bang for your buck out there
b) Ported/Coated Stock Exhaust Manifold – needs to be taken out for turbo install anyway
c) Megan O2 Housing – needs to be taken out for turbo install as well
9) Meth Injection - Aquamist HFS-5 – a progressive system seemed better suited for road racing applications where partial throttle response is important. As e85 is not particularly available in my area (and I don’t want to have to worry about finding it when I travel), I want to stay on 93 pump gas as the main fuel off the track. So, meth injection seemed great as it basically gives you high octane fuel and knock suppression when you need it and, by hooking the failsafe into the stock ECU, you can turn the injection (and high boost) on and off at the push of a button using the map switching and ECU direct boost control patches.b) Ported/Coated Stock Exhaust Manifold – needs to be taken out for turbo install anyway

I always find it frustrating when reading other threads and the original post has been changed. Hopefully I'll be making changes to the original post, so I figured I quote the original for posterity sake.

well bud i am doing everything you said to my car right now lol except meth. but imma go wit cams too yeah i should be like at easy 450 whp no prob on 93 pump gas

Good point. I'll have to look into that a little more. I started checking it out, but stopped because I thought they get pretty loud at WOT. I don't want to draw attention from every LEO in the area Originally Posted by Import Junky

I also need to look more into sound restrictions at the tracks near us (you're not too far from NYC, right?)Quote:
Great! How's it working out? Have you been happy with the ebay FMIC? It's definitely one place I was considering cutting costs.Originally Posted by evosam726

I spent a decent amount of time looking into all this, so I'm hoping this will function as a good reference in the future for people with similar goals to myself.

I'm 1.5-2hrs from NYC. It's pretty laxed around here with the cops. Besides, I don't do much local driving with the Evo. I'm usually on an Interstate with it.

Import Junky:
I noticed there's no FMIC on your mod list. Are you still running the stock FMIC?

It seems you done your homework and have your path already. For cams I seen people use GSC S1 cams, they are not too bad on idle.

im planning for a massive build myself almost got all the parts together. here goes i look at your list and planned route am im like wtf??? everything seems in order except a couple things im not getting. again its your car do what you want just have a few sugguestions
1. to me the arp headstuds are WAy out of order makes no sense where they are at. Why not change them out when your doing cams. do it all at once. only have to mess with head region once i say but ok.
2. what about ported/coated intake and 65mm/ Tb. no where to be found might as well do those cheap mods for cheap power. not much but every little hp helps
3. clutch are fine almost everybody goes with the exedy twin hd. i went with exedy twin carbon. but nice choice
4. Intercooler ets is cool. how about aps. nice intercooler check out the specs etc.
5. There is no bov upgrade on your list might want to look into the aps twin vent it is unmatched. there are others but hands down this holds 34psi or more like a champ.
6. turbo is cool as hell i have a red not installed yet but good choice. if your not going for more hp might want to at least look at the bbk full
7. the megan o2 seems like a fad. i have not seen any proven gains from it. i know the ebay o2 housing and Br fab housing(ebay) have proven gains by them up to 15 hp. look in to that.
8. Cams what about Kelford you completely opted them out look into those.
that is my opinion is all do with it as you like just saying. Good luck

Thanks! This is awesome. Exactly the kind of stuff I was hoping to get back and list out for people looking for a path to a red sized turbo on a DD.Originally Posted by RockmanX

Very true. My only thought is that I'd like to get them done earlier for safety as I start turning up the boost and I'm not sure on my cam plans yet.1. to me the arp headstuds are WAy out of order makes no sense where they are at. It's there under item "8d" - "DV". I suppose I should label this "DV/BOV" but I don't think I want to do vent-to-air. No desire for the loud psssst sound and that seems to be the reason do the VTA BOVs as opposed to the DVs5. There is no bov upgrade on your list might want to look into the aps twin vent it is unmatched. there are others but hands down this holds 34psi or more like a champ.

Exactly. I want to have the ability to hold the higher boost . From what i understand the green and BBK will start to run out of air at higher boost on race fuel/meth injection. Good luck with the red!6. turbo is cool as hell i have a red not installed yet but good choice. if your not going for more hp might want to at least look at the bbk full

Sound level was definitely the concern with the dump O2. Althought, as long as the tone of the noise rises/falls with RPMs, you could actually think of it as a feature: hear the engine more for shifting/blipping/etc. Originally Posted by Liqquid
