pleeez bare with me here...

First off, I have to say that my mind changed like the wind (period). I've been teeter-tottering between a Red and 35 for about 4 months now. I know this topic has been smashed to a pulp. I just can't chose to save the life of me.

The car will be daily driven. Stock ecu for a while until I upgrade to an EMS. I'll be tracking (drag) it nearly every weekend or so. I don't want the spool of a 42 and I won't go higher than a 35, a 37 is pushing it. The motor will be built eventually, I'm looking at either a drop-in built bottom end or a BR stage III. Same with the head. 500+whp is where I think I want to be.

I've looking at the BR HTA35. I'm not sure what the HTA86 is but I hear it's better than the HTA35. And of course the Red.

*puts flame suit on* What do you have for me... Again I know I'm beating a dead horse right now but I just can't decide. Thanks for putting up with this.

I would rather have an HTA86 35R on a fully built motor and head with an AEM EMS.

Maybe you should plan ahead and do it once, do it right.

I'm going through the same debate in my head right now..... I have had the red on my car and loved it, but it just flat runs out of breath I think at the top. You can see it on the dyno graphs, at the top of the RPM range the HP flattens out, while the HTA86 has an increase slop for HP all the way to what ever red line even if that happens to be at 9500RPM. With that come a decrease in low end torque do to slower spool up...... its all give an takes...

I would recommend going with either the Red or a T-4 twin-scroll setup for the HTA turbo of your choice. The HTA setup will be faster at the strip while trading off a bit of response. In my opinion, the open-scroll HTA setups give up too much of the responsiveness that makes the Evo so much fun.

If you want JUST 500WHP then Red is your choice. If you want to grow either the HTA3582 or HTA3586

i agree with ph3n1x if your shooting for 500whp like i am get a red like i have. if you plan to grow alot more 600+ bracket then of course the choice is already made you would have to go with a bigger turbo. I personally think the red is a amazing turbo to give the user that much power on a stock frame is crazy but again if your lust for power is going to grow then you need to go with a bigger turbo. Its that simple. All these turbos are designed for different setups. some poeple want a 700whp some what way less. I say look at the how much is this gonna cost if things start to break also how much is it gonna cost to get to that GOAL. i say if you never riden in a 500whp car then how do you know your gonna want more. heck you might get it to 420 and be like "wow to fast for me". so build for what you want if all you want is 500 and some change then the red is for you if you want even more then 35r and above pretty simple. Every turbo has its limitations the question is how much is it gonna take to get to that big number. can you afford a 4000 clutch and a 4500 dollar turbo kit (prices vary) dont forget installation cost etc 4000 bottom end 1700 head. It adds up and could take you awhile before its all together by that time who knows you might lower your goals because of build time

.02 cents

Is a rebuilt IX turbo/ Red just as good as a new Red. I'm trying to justify the +$700 for the "new" Red.

Rebuilt is fine as long as the CHRA is in good condition. Like Ph3nix said, if you want room to grow get a 35R variant. The red is good for most guys, but some get addicted to the power or get used to it and need more. Big thing is, drive an Evo with 500whp and see what you think. If you want more power, go 35R. If its too much power and you want better response, go Red.

What does the Red cost when you send in your own IX turbo to be rebuilt?

If you plan on building the motor go with the HTA86 but cause once you feel the power of the red you will want more and the HTA 86 will be well within your power goals
