HELP! More Problems.

For anyone who remembers my last thread with getting my car started. It was the plugs afterall. I replaced those and now the car starts.

However, the car only starts with a jump, and now that I replaced the battery, the car still acts as if it is dead. There is no power at all unless I jump the car, even with a new battery.

The odd thing is that the car will run after I jump it and keep running until I turn off the key, then when I goto start it there is no power.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

i think it may be the alternator...its probably sucking up all the juice from the battery.

+1 first culprits to look at if a new battery won't start, but then again the battery should still be able to get it started if its brand new.

I just put the old full size battery in and the car starts right up, I switched to a used mini battery due to fitment for UICP.

I just bought a new mini battery, but it must need to be charged.

Can't be the alternator or starter.

Now I found that I either have a boost leak or blown off piping or tubes. Really bad acceleration and rough idle.

Sounds like the STARTER SOLENOID is bad. It shouldn't be the alternator in less the new battery keeps going dead. If the car runs when you jump start it and doesn't die in a little bit then the alternator is working fine. If the alternator is bad and you jump start the car it would drain the battery and then die. The car only uses the battery to start and the alternator to power everything when its running.

Yes, but that doesn't fit for me putting in the original battery and it starting, only with the used and new mini battery I have the problem.

The only other thing is you must be doing something wrong. Batt cables loose, or not making contact.

Triple checked each connection and even the battery cables all the way to make sure they were good. The ground is also good.

Not the starter.

It is NOT the starter if you can start your car via jumping or with the original battery. The new replacement battery you have may not be fully charged or may not have the sufficient amount of CCA (cold cranking amps) required for the starter to turn your engine. I forgot what the CCA rating required for the evo but you can find that info on your original stock battery.

You can either try and charge the new battery or (worst case) replace that new battery if it will not hold a charge period, or because it did not meet specs. After that, if you know somebody with a multimeter (digital preferred) you can check the voltage of battery at the posts to check it's charge status. If it shows a voltage reading of 12v plus then it is sufficiently charged, and thus should start your car. In some vehicles, even 11.9v at the battery may not be enough to crank said vehicles.

The alternator being the problem is uncommon because your car is fairly new...but you can also check if the alternator is actually "charging" the battery with the multimeter; If the car started and is on, the voltage reading at the battery posts should be at least 14v plus. If I remember correctly, mine was 14.4v... There are other things to things to check for when diagnosing if the alternator is the culprit but you will need the proper equipment. (or you can just take it to your local Mitsu dealer, Autozone, PepBoys, etc.)

But it is definitely NOT the starter. You should always check the battery first because it is part of the two systems (starting and charging) that your car needs to operate. Good luck.
