Question so I replaced my TB shaft seals...

Hey Guys,

So on the weekend I took off my TB and replaced the seals. No problems except the old seals where a biatch to get out :|

However I found a ring of gunk around the throttle plate where it closed against inner of the TB.

I cleaned it off pretty easy with carby/TB cleaner and a towel.

I also found a lot of black crap on the backside of the throttle plate (ie the IM side) this too came of REAL easy with the carby cleaner spray.

what the hell is that stuff, it kinda looked like carbon/exhaust soot. The FRONT of the throttle plate was clean as a whistle and my IC pipes are good as well (been running a catch can since about 100 miles )

Any ideas on what the black stuff is and where it came from?

The only thing I can think of is too much MIVEC advance causing exhaust to get back into the intake tract??!?!?!

Cheers
D.

Tephra, it is from the EGR Mine was the exact same way. I could show you before and after pics of the inside of the intake mani too.

I cant imagine your seals were anywhere close to needing to be changed.
As for the black stuff, thats basicly what your entire combustion chamber looks like.

I think I should change mine too. I'm now at 46K miles. Any idea as to where I can get the new seal? A good quality one?

Most seem to like Milspec/Works TB seals, they hold up pretty well. Dave & others have changed them out to eliminate TB boost leaks, good luck.

You know evos have issues with them dry roting and causing boost leaks. Its never a bad idea to change them. Mine started leaking at 31,000 miles.

I used the Works ones. Real good quality.

As for the carbon buildup, it's normal. It took a while for me to clean my plate
