transfer case warranty or TSB?
transfer case warranty or TSB?
Hey everyone, I have been searching all over to try and find out if Mitsubishi warranted the Evo transfer cases if/when they went out. I can't find anything with the exact info that I am looking for. So...
Does anyone know if the transfer cases were covered under the manufacturer warranty, or were/are they covered due to a Mitsubishi Technical Service Bulletin(TSB)?
The reason I am asking is, I am looking at buying a 2005 RS that needs a new TC and I would like to know if I am going to be spending upwards of 3k for a new one. If so, I guess it's not too big of deal so long as the price is right, being that once I get the car home, it can sit until it rusts, as I don't really need a car to get around the city.
Thank you guys mucho!
Jeff

Glad to see that some people are still buying cars as a toy. Anyway. There are many factors that go into TC warranty. First the car must have less then 60k on it because as a second owner mitsu does not cover the 100k drivetrain on 05 any longer. Second it can not be modded in any way. ANY WAY. This means cone filters coil overs lower springs exhaust intercooler wheels tires etc... The reason is any power mods or suspention other then stock can affect the integrity of the drivetrain and what it was built for. (BS) Third and most important if you get this far in the process, TC fluid must have been changed by Mitsu requirements. Diaqueen oil. So service manager will check dealer records to see service history. This is when it's nice to have written service records to support even if it was done at a non-dealer shop. Now if you made it this far, they will have a tech put the car in the air (on a lift) and drain TC fluid to see quality of oil and test if in fact it is Diaqueen. If any descrepency has happened in this process they will have to contact the District service manager which might be a week before you have an answer. And if the DSM approved the waranty. It takes a week to two for the TC to be shipped from Japan.
My thoughts on this process it sucks. I had a similar situation you are in except my EVO was my daily driver. I bought with 56k on it. I had no death whine when purchased. So I do what I do to all my cars that I buy changed all fluids to start fresh and I have a baseline of milage for future maintenance. Within 2k miles it starts (the death whine) and knew exactly what it was. I took it straight to the dealer and this process I just explained happened to me.
In result of the dealer doing the work which I was very paranoid with and had every reason as I will explain. I don't like other people working on my car because I do all the work since I am a mechanic. I know what happens at dealer shops because I use to work at one. But since I didn't feel like coming out of pocket 3k dollars I had to bite the bullet and allow the dealer techs to repair the TC. So after I got the car back I immediatly take it to my shop to inspect the work that was done on the TC.
All four bolts from the body tie bars were loose(visable)
Missing exhaust hanger
Completly destroyed the axel nut and put no cotter pin.
And my favorite a gear oil leak from the diver side axel inner.
Took the car back to the dealer to get the axelseal fixed. I thought the tech may have damaged it doing the RnR. They put it in the air, I asked to go back so I can show them the leak. The tech insisted it was coming from the power steering line(idiot) and to drive it and come back if it persists. Long story short. That dealer went out of business, I now have 70k miles. I changed the axel seal(unnessary) because it was fine but I had the seal so I changed it anyway, still leaked. Now I am changing the circlip (axel C ring) or i should say input shaft circlip because it was damaged and noticed the axel wasn't seating on the shaft correctly that's where the leak was. If it still leaks the next step is the CV joint, it may have been damaged since I put so many miles on it.
Good luck with your purchase. If indeed it is the TC. Make sure u get a great deal on the price because you may not get it warrentied.

Thanks man...I used to work at a dealership myself, but never saw people having to deal with as much crap as I here about the Evo's on here. It's crazy how ****-like Mitsubishi can be! I've been looking at Shepard trans', tre trans' and Jack's trans' options and honestly wouldn't mind biting a little bullet and just sending it to one of them for a little building...just so long as the ring and pinion aren't the problem.
