Break in period for new head..

Hey guys....just bought a brand new Cosworth Evo8 head.
Can you guys let me know how to break in this head in terms of :
- kms to drive
- what rpms to limit the car to

A friend told me that the head requires very little breaking in but I dont want to take any chances since I never bought a new head before and the head itself is quite expensive.

Any advice?
Thanks.

i dont think anything in a 4G63 really needs any breaking in except for the rings.

If you are installing new cams and lifters, you may want to use cam lube to protect your investment. Initial startup aftre assembly is the most critical moment as far as wear is concerned.

You apply cam lube to the lifters and cam lobes etc. There are several products. Some are liquids, others are greases. Most cam manufacturers, such as Crane Cams, Competiton Cams, etc. make one. They can be purchased through Jegs or Summit.

I always suggest assembly lube on all the rollers and camshaft journals when assembling the head. I will run 1 quart of marvel with some conventional oil for the first oil change interval. The first interval can be a couple of days or a couple of hours depending on if the car needs to be tuned. if the car needs tuning i will setup the off boost programming and then change the oil and filter and then commence the beating :-). The basic idea is to get all the contaminates that might have gotten in the open engine out and then go for it.

10/4. I pretty much do what Greg suggests. Ditto the quick oil and filter change. Check oil after initial startup for metal particles. I like to use General Motors EOS Assembly Lubricant (G.M. P/N 88862586), instead of Marvel Mystery Oil, but it's the same idea.

Pour some of the EOS quart over the cam lobes before startup, and add the rest in with the crankcase oil. As Greg says, apply the assembly lube to the lobe faces etc. Start it up let it idle for 5-10 minutes. Shut it off, dump the crankcase oil and change to new oil and a new filter.

EDIT: The GM assembly lube comes in one quart containers. It had been discontinued for a few years. However, it was recently reinstated under the new part number listed above, and with a slightly different name. It used to be known as GM Oil Supplement.

Then you're ready to rumble.
