Budget 2.3L Stroker Questions

Hey All.

Im currently thinking about rebuilding my engine into a 2.3L, while at the same time as doing the bottom end, Ill port & Polish the topend..

I mainly use the car for daily driving, hard street, winding road, touge, time attack and circuit.

The circuit that race on, favours small nimble cars that have good acceleration. Due to the short straight, there is no real advantage with having BIG HP.

In saying that I would like a bit of a jump in HP. My car is currently at 265hp, and my goal is around the 330 ~ 350hp mark with quick spool, and lots of torque down low and in the midrange to get me out of those tight corners quickly..

My current modifications are;
  • Custom 3" Turbo Back Exhaust (Twin Dump Pipe, MIL.SPEC Race Cat, 3" Catback)
  • Kelford TX272 Cams (With Fidanza Cam Gears)
  • HKS EVC
  • Walbro Fuel Pump
  • ECU Flash
  • Plazmaman Intercooler Piping
  • Trust Intercooler
  • SUN Auto Earthing Kit & Voltage Stabiliser

The following modification are what I plan on doing (Any advice would be fantastic);
  • SPOOL Conrods
  • Wiseco Pistons (9.0:1 CR 'Stroker' Pistons)
  • ARP Main Cap Bolts
  • ARP Head Studs
  • Cometic Laminated Head gasket
  • ACL Race main bearings
  • ACL Race B/E Bearings
  • ARP Rod Bolts
  • 2.3L Stroker Crank (Im not sure what to use here!?)
  • Evo 9 Turbocharger
  • Valve Springs & Titainium Retainers (Im not sure what to use here!?)

I need some advice on where to look for the crank and valve train gear.. Who makes a good quality product? Im TRYING to keep prices down..

Thanks in advance for all your advice and help in this matter!

Regards,
Alex

^ I did have a look into thier products.. Too expensive.. (too expensive due to shipping and exchange rate)

Also, Im not going to upgrade the turbo yet.. that may come down the track, but not yet.. Ill see how it goes on a evo 9 turbo. I dont want much more then 330 ~ 350HP.

The only things im looking at now, are crank and valvesprings/retainers (as above ^^)

^ Maybe in the US, but trust me, and E9 turbo will only get me too 300hp over here.. our dynos read VERY low..

I already am tuned and im running kelford cams..

Also, I want that low down torque that the 2.3L will give me. I know someone that has a stock turbo'ed evo 6 that brought on 22psi @ 2000rpm.. that is impressive in my eyes. I want instant torque, and instant spool.

So, I need some help with my options for a crank and valve springs/retainers. This will allow me to build a tasty motor, that I can always throw a bigger turbo onto at a later date.

I would like 330~350HP so I can get used to it, THEN I might see what I need to do the car..

-For the crank shaft just use an OEM Mitsu 4G64 crankshaft
-Eagle rods a cheap and will stand up to what your running no problem
-Springs and retainers. Supertech, Kiggley, BC, Tomei. I know BC's cost about $180
-Skip the cometic HG and just use OEM

^ Thank you very much!!

So an OEM Mitsu 4G64 crank eh?

Where about can I get one for a reasonable price?

I believe SPOOL rods and Eagle rods are similar if not the same. Except one is made in Australia, the other in the USA. For me, Spool rods are dirt cheap as I dont have to import them over..

Ill look into Supertech, they sound good!

Skip the Cometic? Really? How come?

i cant believe that with all your current mods your at 265... thats less then a bone stock one here!! and kelford cams are amazing!!! look into an FP red *forced performance* it spools SOOO fast and gives killer power!!! perfect for circuit racing!!!

^ As I said, the US dynos seem to read ALOT Higher then the Australian ones.

We have a guy here running an FP red, and he is only about 360 ~ 370HP, and has ALOT of lag.. (4500rpm full boost)...

I would REALLY like to get stroker happening.. more power and torque earlyer..

Search for Cometic and you may find the info leading most to believe the stock HG is the way to go, my tuner along with alot of others reccommend stock HG.

FP's Beehive springs are pretty good, 220 bucks and are made to be used with stock seats and retainers, drop in install

they are out of 2.4L mitsu engines, im sure you could source on for cheap out a wrecked car.

stick with the oem gasket or cosworth, there was a test posted here somewhere that showed the sealing characteristics of different HG's. the cometic left a lot to be desired, much worse than OEM
