evo8 newb problems
Hi im a new and returning member. had a account here but lost the log in and email so here i am new and fresh. Im having few issues with my evo and i figured id turn to you guys since this place is filled with evo enthusiasts and people with more knowledge on this car than a regular joe like myself.. well here it is..
I have a 2005 evo 8. i bought the car less than 2 years ago with 37k miles. now almost have 82k. its mainly stock besides a flash exhaust and manual boost controller. im running 23lbs
the issue that im having is that the car blows smoke outta the exhaust when i get on it. this situationhappened twice so far..
1st time i was driving normally then downshifted and punched it to beat a yellow light.. person behind me noticed a cloud of smoke commin out of my exhaust. it was lil dark not black and not white..
2nd time happened last friday which has been few months after the first time.
i launched the car off the line.. not hard but roughly 3-4 k rpms.. by the time i slipped the clutch and let the car go the rpms went up with speed and once i hit about 5-6k rpms.. the car backfired 3 times in a row with loud pops.. now idk what causes that but it was loud. along with the pops (backfire?) the smoke came out again. it was dark but the car behind me having his headlighs on made me notice the smoke again.. now im begining to worry..
what can this be? i know i have lotta miles and its still stock turbo and motor, also noticed the oil was dark so i changed it yesterday. even though i was due for it but seemed darker than ever. i use 10w30 mobile1 fully synthetic and changed it every 4-5k miles.
i havent changed my spark plugs or plugs and i hear that might be a start to narrowing down problems.. i also found out that i missed out on alot of general maintenance within all the miles i put on so i was told to change lotta things like timing belt fuel filter and other things.. idk if they lead to any of my problems but what do u guys think? any help will be appreciated.
id hate for this car to crap out on me now cause im laid off and i love my car and dont want it to blow up lol guess maybe i shouldve maintained it better along this whole time. but is it something serious to worry about or something i can do thats simple to avoid any disasters?

if it had compression issues woudnt the car run weird at all times?
it drives fine otherwise no power loss or anything.. beside what happened with smoke and the backfire once i got on it

like the above post says. Run compression and leakdown tests......
post the ACCURATE results...
im guessing worn piston rings, valve seals etc............
or you could just be running way too rich on boost................maybe flash back to stock.
take the advise for what its worth.. i ve been wrenching at a BMW dealer for 5 years now.

Black oil? Does the dipstick smell like gas? Could be mixing fuel in with the oil (Ring blow by). change the plugs first (Plugs wouldn't cause the oil to blacked anymore though) So I agree with the folks above (compression check first, then leak down test) easy to do, not much skill needed to do them, hell I did it! LOL Good luck.

soot? im assuming you mean the black **** outta the exhaust? no its not on the bumper but the inside of exhaust is black as hell

should i change the spark plus /wores befor ethe gauge test or do it before changing first? i just got the gauge from auto zone so im gonna go for it and check. btw what numbers are normal .. which i hope to see?
ok so i took out the first spark plug and hooked up the gauge.. was i supposed to unplug both the clips from sparkplug 2 and 4? cause the car actually started and ran but i turned it off right of way and it ran funny..i thought the car wont start????

ok unplugged the clips and the car didnt start this time.. mistake on my part.. (hopefully i didnt mess anything up now)
#1- 150
#2- 140
#3- 150
#4- 148ish, a lil short of 150

also so the gaps on the tip of spark plugs dont look all the same, where the plugs clip on to the spark plug itself..
so what do you guys think now? what should i do next. obviously change the spark plugs.
im gonna try to check for shaft play in the turbo next..
