cam question

Cams are going to be the next upgrade I'm planning on my car, and I have some questions that I'm sure you guys can answer. Here's what relevant parts are currently on my car: AMS turboback, AMS intercooler, Walbro fuel pump, Perrin turbo inlet/intake, Hallman boost controller. I have an Evo IX by the way. I'm really not looking to do new springs/retainers, so I need a cam setup that will work fine without them. I've been doing some research and leaning towards GSC S1's. The car is a daily driver all year round, so I'm just looking for some more power over the whole rpm range really. I don't need any crazy high end power, and I'm not looking to lose my low end power either. My only real plans power wise for the future are ported manifolds, o2 housing, and possibly upgrading to the BBK turbo down the line. My questions I guess are basically, is the S1 a good cam choice for what I have described? Does anyone have any other suggestions for a different cam? Will I be fine on the stock springs/retainers with my future plans? Also, is it safe to raise the redline at all(8k maybe?) when I do the cams, if I don't do new springs/retainers? Perhaps even GSC, or CBRD can chime in and give me some concrete answers, since I plan on using their products. Thanks for any help you guys can give.

IMHO, on an IX get a BBK before you get cams.

When you do get cams, get the FP 4R's. They improve spool-up dramatically and hold top end. If you do them after the BBK go all out and do the springs as well, you'll be ready to rev higher once you have that thing

Wow, I must have missed that thread. That really does seem like it's a better idea for what I'm looking for to be honest. Hmmm, I guess I've got some thinking to do now.

If I had an IX, its def what I would do. Don't get me wrong, cams are worth doing, its just that the stock cams on the IX are damn good. Last weekend I saw an IX with stock cams make 425whp on dyno dynamics with a FP red on 32psi w/ E85.

thats an ***-ton of boost for 425. Cams would help that car. With cams and the stock ix turbo you can easily make 350+.

Not on a DD. A stock IX dynos around 200whp on a DD, 300-320ish modded. I vote for the new core Kelfords, they're hard to beat.

Damn that torque curve from the link that scheides provided hits quick. Personally I went with Cosworth M2 cams + meth first as foundational pieces before I upgrade the turbo (next project). My #'s are close to the same as on the other thread.

With that said, the BBK full is sure tempting. Previously I was only looking at the Red or possibly an HTA35r. I still have some researching and thinking to do, that is for sure.

the S1 evo 9 cams were designed with your exact setup in mind. i wanted our customers to have a cam that would increase power across the board, work on the factory valvetrain, and give great top end performance.

all this being said the reason why you would do cams rather than going with a BBK turbo and 32psi of boost is so you can keep a respectable boost level say 22-24psi for your Daily Driver setup and make improvements in power...

and your idea of running to 8k rpms on the factory valve train is doable. maybe at the drag strip in 4th gear or on occasion but i wouldnt run them that hard as you would be better off shifting as your power band will be 35-7500.

you need both.

the turbo will provide the BIGGEST HP gain, but obviously at a higher expense....

i pair the BBK with the s1's (or even s2's if people can spend the extra on labor/springs) ALL the time.

So if I do it in two steps, you would suggest the s1's being a better idea before the turbo upgrade? I was looking at doing the cams probably this summer, and then saving up for the turbo upgrade over the winter. Also, while you're responding to this thread, what size injectors would you suggest looking at with that setup(s1's, and BBK full)?
