ACT, you suck
Witness the pain -----> http://www.vimeo.com/5547580
As you can see, I have an ACT XTSS clutch that locks me out at high RPM.
I've:
- Had the clutch installed by a professional
- Had the tranny upgraded to a Shep, so the tranny has been off and the clutch fitment checked and adjusted twice
- Adjusted the pedal in various positions, including as far up a it will go
- Tried with/without restrictor pill
- Tried with stock clutch line and stainless clutch line
- Tried with stock front motor mount and Blox front motor mount
- Tried with stock underhood shift bushings and solid underhood shift bushings
There is no getting around it... I get lockout in 2nd and/or 4th every time I go to the track. I can short shift @ 7000RPM to get around it, but anything higher and I'm locked out.
This was a brand new clutch kit with brand new TOB, and it's given me issues since day 1.

I have everything. ACT 6 puck sprung, Blox front motor mount, SS clutch line, and shifter bushings and I get locked out in 2nd, 4th, and 5th. If I don't get locked out, I usually grind the hell out of 4th and 5th grinds regardless. I had to stop using NLTS because it was worse than regular fast shifting.
Warped this, air gap that, install my ****..... its the clutch. This isn't a problem with the stock clutch. This isn't a problem with exedy stage 1-2 or TD. People running the centerforce, clutchmasters, fidanza, and south bend aren't locking out.
I've run out of fingers and toes counting how many people went from a functional stock clutch to the HDSS and had immediate problems. Then they suck it up and get a twin disk and the problem is gone.

My VIII locked out at about 400whp Dyno Dynamics. I could shift at 7500 at ~350whp when it was trapping 118, but to trap 120+, it would lock out right at redline. I detuned it for drag racing because of this.
I couldn't hold 1-3 without missing the next upshift. Stock flywheel.
Went back to a stock clutch and could upshift on the limiter no problem.

dude i no exactly what u mean!!!! have everything youve done but you got it a little better you get locked out in 4th only i get locked out of EVERY gear if i go above 5.5k!!! i hate my act!!!
Not that i'm some kind of professional, however, after doing two of my own clutch installs, I've noticed that for people who are not familiar with Evo clutches it can be easy to damage the wedge collar/TOB which may (or may not at all) be related to the ability for the clutch to dis/reengage. Might be worth checking out the TOB through the inspection hole on the bottom fo the transmission.
Again, i'm a beginner mechanic, but this is where i'd look.

I get the same lockout with my Exedy OEM clutch. When I can finally get into 4th gear though, it grinds into 4th at high RPMs. 2nd, 3rd, and 5th don't grind nor lockout. It's just 4th.
Personally, I don't think it's the clutch's fault. As someone here said, it might be the TOB. I've heard that the OEM TOBs were better then other manufactures (like Exedy, ACT...) that makes it. If I'm wrong on this, someone feel free to correct me.
My current setup is:
Exedy OE replacement kit that came with a pressure plate and TOB
SS clutch line, fully bled
pedal adjusted right at catch point
re-greased the TOB and fork

LOL! ACT FTL
Should have spent the extra $600 for the Exedy Twin disc, I've had mine since the end of may and freakin love it. When straight from install to dyno with no break in and held amazing on the dyno never had any gear lock out and the pedal feel is almost the same as stock.

I'd had my act hdss for 21k miles...I used to get lock out maybe once every 30 or so high rpm shifts
buschur underhood shifter bushing really changed the feel of things and definitely improved the lock out issue...I have had it happen to me once in the last 12k miles and I drive my car hard all the time

yes lock out sucks. but im not going to lie i have easly over 60 launches on this clutch with stock flywheel resurface. and it held up real good! its just starting to slip now. its a very good clutch for the money. the lock out sucks tho im going to have to agree. but this clutch can take a veryy good beating!
Something wrong in the install. Just because a mechanic is a pro doesn't mean he knows it all. You have to consider if he knows Evos, and followed the factory Service Manual.
I've had my ACT for 15k miles of daily and hard driving, and it shifts just fine. I did my clutch myself.

Gonna use it for target practice once it comes out. Adjusted every which way from Sunday no help. Mine seems to be about 7800 and up anything below that it'll shift
