The trouble is that more power generates more heat and stress, and generally requires more rpm to achieve it. When that power is being generated, the rate of wear is rapidly accelerated, especially when the revs exceed 7k rpm. Succinctly put, the greater the power, rpm, and time spent generating that power, the shorter the lifespan. To put that into perspective, squeezing 700whp from 2.0L is akin to 1750whp being asked from a 5.0L Mustang. How long would anyone expect that to survive until the next rebuild? Keep cash handy.
Putting longevity into a general rule of thumb isn't easy, because there are just too many variables that influence the equation. I'd say keeping things to around 500whp and 8k rpm with only occasional bursts of power would be a good means of maximizing longevity.

This reminds me of that Top Gear Fuel Mileage episode where they took a brand new M3 and a new Prius and put them both on the roadcourse.
They put the Prius in front and had the driver drive as fast as he could while the M3 just had to stay on the Prius back bumper - In the end, the Prius had to use all it's 134 horsepower, while the M3 was just cruising along barely using any of it's power to maintain on the back bumper of the Prius... Guess who had the better gas mileage...?

Ted I agree with all your points - my point was basically we're talking about Daily Driving on public roads in the USA, we're not blasting down the Autobahn everyday... I only know of a couple of roads where you can keep the pedal down for more than 20 seconds in a 600hp car and even then you'll be putting yourself in jeopardy of a prison sentence

The biggest flaw is that with the Prius, you're beating on it all the time and I bet the electric motor was barely used. Now, a 134HP engine has to carry not only the driver and chassis, but also the electric motor and it's batteries. It easily gets roughly 3000lbs altogether with everything stock, such as suspension and tires. Since it was beaten the whole time, it was a bad comparisson for gas millage. In order to fully acheive MPG, you have to relearn how to drive when you get in a hybrid. I've known a few ppl that can get 46 MPG city and even more on freeways.
can anyone help me i have 03 evo with 06 mivec engine with a 2.3 ams stroker kit i would like to know what is the best turbo. i want to use this car for daily driving too. but i want to build at least 700hp evo.
and for my engine i am putting ams stroker kit, what else can i do to build a very strong engine. please be specific because i dont really understand i am just reaserching online

I especially like the comparo because more often than not I see Prius drivers running around on the interstate doing 70+. Talk about missing the point!
