Broke bolt in turbo, what should I do?

Today has just been an awful day for my evo..

The oil return lines on these turbos are the absolute worst things to ever exist. Mine has been great for 2 weeks and today when I decided to turn on the car it started leaking non stop like crazy. So I tried tightening the screws on top and one of them just broke and the other one was cross threaded into the oil pan

Whats the best way to go about fixing this?

Mitsu oil return lines on their turbos do suck indeed.

grab that tap set and re tap the cross threaded one if the threads are shot go up a size. If you can’t pull the bolt in the turbo it may be time for a trip to your local machine shop. They can extract most bolts and if it's really bad they can drill out the bolt hole and put a helicoil in to replace the threads.

I had a ss bolt break off in to the hotside of my turbo. I had to take it to a machine shop to dremel out the bolt starting at the smallest bit working up. Luckly they were able to drill it out with out messing up the threads. I thought for sure the threads were gone. We chased out the threads with a matching tap and a new bolt (same size) when in like butter. Good luck.

your text is not clear at all which bolts broke. there are two bolts on turbo and two on oil pan. it is best to pull oil pan and weld new nut on pan. tapping for next size larger is not good advice as shavings will go into bottom of pan.

if bolt snapped off in turbo it should spin out easily with reverse drill bit.

They actually arent that bad. The problem is that alot of DIYer Evo guys (and some shops) don't know how to properly clean gasket maiting surfaces, don't use the proper gaskets, and tighten the 10mm head bolts untill somthing snaps (ala this situation). Also, when leaks develop from the line itself, it's usualy from the flex section. This can occur when the line is really old, or when people pull the line off with the turbo and tweak the hell out of the flex section.

Yea I was planning on just welding a new nut to the oil pan.

As far as the bolt that broke in the turbo Im going to take the turbo off to get better leverage because i couldnt drill it will it was still on the car and hope fully that will do the trick but if not Im probably just going to take it to a machine shop.
