Question Mitsu newb swapping IX engine. Quick question. Please help.

Been a mechanic for 7 years, but wrenching in your own garage is a lil different. I'm taking a blown engine out of an 06 and swapping for a new one. The engine is almost out, went to take out the lower engine to trans bolt on the back side, but it has butted up to the tcase and wont come out any further. Does the tcase need to be removed to get this last bolt out or am I missing something?

Thanks for the help guys.

Your access to at least one bolt between the engine and trans on the back of the engine is going to be blocked by the tcase. It's pretty easy to take the tcase out to gain access to the bolt. I used a bunch of extensions and ended up doing the ratcheting in the passenger wheel well. It doesn't need to come all the way out of the car. just unbolt it and move it off to the side a little.

You can either pinch the hose for the acd before you move the banjo bolt out of the way for that one tcase bolt on the top, or you can save it for last and back it out slowly as you move the tcase out at the same time to avoid removing the banjo bolt and opening the acd system.

As stated above my post, the T-case does need to be unbolted from the transmission in order to get at the last bolt that holds the motor to the transmission. The banjo bolt is the bolt that holds the acd pressure line to the transfercase and blocks access to one of the 6 t-case bolts that attaches the t-case to the transmission. Just remove the banjo bolt but it will remove all the fluid from your ACD system unless you somehow stop the flow of fluid, also as stated above my post although I don't recommend that method but to each his own. Make sure when you reassemble it that you bleed the ACD system or your ACD pump will not last long. Good luck.

Just drop the subframe and take it out all at once.

Thanks for the info guys. Whoever was in here last really botched the job. About half the bolts i've ran into were only finger tight. It's amazing the car didn't just take itself apart... The sixth bolt that's supposed to be below the banjo wasn't even there. One of the engine-to-tranny bolts was missing as well. :-/ Damn p.o.

I got that last bolt I was after, now separating the tranny from the engine and prepping the new engine.

make sure you replace the oil cooler too.. specially if the old engine blew chunks, little bits will be trapped in there.

Yep not a problem. The new engine only has single thousands on it and it came with the cooler and lines. Was gonna use those ones anyway.
