Various Spec Clutch Questions

After reading a few threads here on evom, I ponied up and bought a Spec Supertwin, part number SM80PT. This is the puck style, not full face. Expecting carbon/grahite friction material, I was suprised to see cerametallic. In several of the threads here, people stated they had the P trim with carbon/graphite friction material so that's what I thought I was getting.

Since engagement is important to me (it's a daily driver), I'd like to hear from those using the Spec Supertwin with ceramatallic friction material, and your impressions on engagement. The carbon/graphite camp seems to really like the engagement, what about the cerametallic guys?

One more question, I've got about .087" (or 2.2 mm) clearance between the legs of the pressure plate and the flywheel when the clutch is unbolted. Seems a bit tight to me. Did anyone else measure this clearance?

It's not installed yet, so it's easy enough to box up and send back.

As a point of reference, I'm running the Exedy Twin HD currently. It behaves nice on easy roll outs from full stops, but anything more than that but less than a 5000 rpm clutch dump results in extreme clutch chatter. That's what I'm trying to get away from

I haven't seen what you have, but you would be wise to take closeup photos of the discs and contact SPEC directly to positively identify what you have. I would much rather have the Kevlar facing. IF you have the incorrect discs, it may be as easy as a disc swap to get you where you want to be.

Thanks for the feedback Ted B. It's the same friction material as pictured in this thread.

Difference is both discs I received are puck style instead of one being full faced.

IIRC, the P-trim is puck style on both sides. I believe what you see in that discussion is the SS. Call SPEC to be certain.

After talking to Spec I'm convinced I do have the carbon/graphite discs that are standard on the P trim supertwin. Again, my discs friction material looks very similar to the discs in this thread.

This does not look like the carbon clutches I've seen in the past, but in fact Spec's are a "hybrid", and if you rub your finger on them, you can see the graphite coming off on your finger. Appearances can be decieving to the untrained eye.

Hopefully this hasn't caused any confusion and will actually help others when they get their discs and say "hey, wait a minute, this doesn't look like carbon".

there's no doubt in my mind that there is metal in the disc facings, a lot of metal, but I also think there is carbon/graphite in as well. Hence the "hybrid". Very well could be marketing, but I'm willing to give it a try.

Hey, I'll try anything once

I was worried when I read this thread, since I recently purchased my SM80PT that TedB helped convince me in getting... After reading TedB's experience with this clutch I was convinced this clutch was for me so purchased one this month. I received it last week and it looks like the one in the link you provided dubbleugly01...

I wouldn't think Spec would send you an SM80PT with a different type of setup without asking for it. In their site it states that
Friction is provided by dampened, full-faced carbon graphite discs. Organic, fiber and full metallic options are available.
At first I thought, wait a minute, why would they send me a organic, fiber or full metallic when these are optional and I never requested it.

Thanks for the update though, it really helps alleviate alot of questions for future owners....

Edit: I will post my first experiences with this brand new clutch... and after breaking it in...
