Drivetrain noise...again

Just had the transmission and transfercase rebuilt by Shep due to a previous noise problem. Actually, the transfercase was replaced all together. Now after the rebuild, I've noticed a supercharger-like whine when I take a corner (45 degree turn or more) at mild speeds.

Initially I thought it was my tires rubbing against my wheel well (aggressive offset) but during an autoX this past weekend, it was happening every run and not just during a turn. After the run I'd restage, leave the car in neutral and tap the gas a little to see if I could still hear it...low and behold, it was still there. After I let it cool down, the noise went away until the next run. After the event on the way home, didn't hear it at all so my assumption is that it occurs only when the part (whatever it is) is heated up.

Besides the two rebuilds, the only other drivetrain mod worth mentioning is an Exedy Twin HD.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a bad wheel bearing. Is the sound in both directions or just one?

The sound occured even while out of gear and at a stand still (blipping the throttle)

Ooohhh.. Coming from the serp belt area? Maybe a bad pulley.

Wow, never thought of that. A definite possibility.

This sound is more of a supercharger type whine, and it's definitely not the death whine associated with a bad TC.

Just to reemphasize, it only occurs during spirited cornering and is not limited to only occuring when in gear.

For example, after a run at a local autoX event, I would restage (at a complete stopwhile car was in neutral), blip the throttle and the same whine that was heard while on cours e was apparent in the staging lane.

Also note, that the sound would go away after the car cooled down for a minute or so, while still idling.

And now that I think about it, I was also having a high idle problem at the same time. Even threw a high idle CEL. It later went away after erasing the code and letting the car sit for a bit....strange

if you are worried it is a belt/pulley problem an old trick is to

while the car is idling pour water on the belt. if the noise goes away it is the serp belt, if it continues afterwards you have a bad pulley/

Found the problem...turned out to be the power steering. The fluid level was extremely low. Threw some more in and problem solved.
