Kasey at MAP's 2.4 Hybrid Build

About 4 months ago I purchased a 2003 BBY Evolution 8 from ToxicBoost with around 55k miles on it. In that state the car made 349 and 343 on pump gas with basic bolt-ons (TBE, HKS 264 cams, FMIC, HKS MAF, Filter). In my never ending quest for speed I decided to make a few additional upgrades including the MAP O2 eliminator downpipe, FIC 1450cc injectors and the best ignition money can buy (SparkTech). With these additional modifications and a change to E85 it made 404whp and 424ft/lbs at 30psi on the stock turbo with 9.8 housing. Shortly thereafter I picked up an FP Red with the hopes of breaking the 500whp mark, unfortunately the number two rod decided to let go instead.

My new build will utilize the 2.4L 4G64 block and crankshaft similar to what we have been using in the MAPerformance FDSM for more than 3 years. In our testing on the FDSM platform we have been able to consistently rev over 9000 rpms without a failure at horsepower levels in the realm of 1000whp. In our latest outing it went 8.21 at 166mph in the ¼ mile and we drove it home from the track over 130 miles the event prior. There really is no replacement for displacement!

Here are some of the components that will be used in the build:

- FIC 2150 High Impedance Injectors
- 4G64 Block and Crank
- Custom Wiseco 1400HD Pistons (Already ordered over a week ago)
- MAP Ultimate Duty Connecting Rods
- MAP Ported Cylinder Head (Porting by Master Bob)
- Ferrea Valves
- Custom Grind Camshafts
- GSC Beehive Valve Springs and Retainers
- MAP Rev3 Ported Intake Manifold

Although my goals aren’t quite as high for this build I would like to end up with about 600whp and 600ft/lbs which should be a lot of fun on the street

Here are some pics.

Any reasoning behind the rod letting loose? You are seeing a lot of this lately.

That is a good question. I think it was a combo of really cold temps and to much playing

Sorry to hear about this Kasey.

I'm sure your build will be better than ever and I know where I'll be getting mine built in a few years (when I'm out of college...and have a little more disposable $$..)

And if its any consolation...my car is still running like a bat out of hell!

I'm kind of curious where your oil pump sprocket went? Balance shaft belt problem as well?

I hate it when rods play peekaboo, but a pumped 2.4 seems to be the hot ticket these days. We have one in process and 2 more in the wings. Good luck on your build

Kasey -

The build sounds great, can't wait for the finished product. Keep up the good work.

Thanks,

Michael

We think the rod broke and the balance shaft seized, with the timing belt still moving it sheared off. It ended up bending 12 valves and there is some scoring on the head, but we believe it is salvageable. Also it is playing peekaboo! haha

The 2.4l core shortblock arrived Monday. It has a little over 100k miles but its in pretty good shape overall. It won't be long before its back from the machine shop and we start assembly, here are some more progress pics:

You may be able to see 4G64 in this plate.

LOL it's not even cold yet dude! it's been nice this week

Really sorry to hear about this, did you have it on the dyno before it let go? Awesome carnage pics but sorry to see them at the same time. Ultimately the 2.4 will be a good move, the extra torque down low for average DD is really attractive.

Keep the pics coming!
