Throw out bearing noise...Need opinions!
Hey Guys,
I'm new to the forums. I just picked up a 2004 Evo 8 about 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately it had some issues and one of them sounds like it could be the throw out bearing. The service manager at the dealership I bought it from is busting my ***** about it because I'm guessing he doesn't want to do the work. Every time the car is in neutral and clutch is not pushed in, I hear a slight whining noise and when I push the clutch in, the sound goes away. I also can tell when I rev the car in neutral as opposed to reving it in neutral with the clutch engaged. Dramatic sound difference. Many people have told me it's the throw out bearing including a service tech from another mitsubishi dealership. I wanted to get some more opinions from you guys, and maybe find out the best place to take it around the Rhode Island area.
Thanks guys!

Hey Kracka,
Thanks for the reply. The entire car is stock. I dunno, the noise isn't really that faint. You can definitely pick up on it. A friend of mine drove the car and said that something did sound right as the car reached higher RPM's on the highway. I was thinking that also had something to do with either the clutch or the TOB.

I have the same issue. Numerous techs have confirmed it is my TOB. I am on the stock clutch at 45k miles. The techs have even driven it and although it does catch high, as it has since I bought it with 27k miles, it is completely fine (knock on wood LOL). You shouldn't have to really worry about it and it is quite normal for many evos, especially aftermarket clutch kits making noise. You could look into replacing the clutch though, it wouldn't be a bad idea.

If you hear the noise when the pedal is not pushed in at that point the clutch is engaged and not spinning on the throw out bearing. The noise you are hearing is the flywheel, clutch disk, pressure plate, and input shaft to the trans spinning.
How loud is it? My drivetrain has a slight noise that is noticeable when the clutch pedal is out and the stick is in neutral compared to pedal in. It's much quieter with the pedal in while riding on the TOB because less weight and less parts are spinning. The engine idles slightly lower when I don't have my foot on the pedal as well. It's normal to have a little noise. You're spinning more parts and weight on the end of the engine when you don't have your foot on the pedal.
If it was the throw out bearing you would hear the noise when you pressed the pedal down.
You might have some clutch damage or irregular wear causing more rotational noise than normal from the clutch assembly. It really could be normal noise of the increased amount rotating parts when the clutch is engaged compared to not. If you have a lightweight flywheel like me engaging the clutch is adding a lot to the rotating mass. It's going to cause an audible change in engine noise for sure.
Take off the undertray and see if you see anything out of place looking through the inspection cover on the bottom of the bell housing.

Thank you everyone for your input.
I wish I was more mechanically inclined but I'm hoping to fix that in the next year and with the help of this site. I'll probably end up taking it in to get checked to see if someone can figure out what might be causing this. I dunno, I mean the noise is considerably louder than I'd expect. The entire car is stock no mods in the drive train at all.
But I'll just hope for the best and see what this tuner guy says. Hopefully he'll just say it's nothing to worry about. I heard pulling the tranny off this Evo is a b*tch.
Thanks again guys!
