just got new clutch. judder when i downshift

I just got an exedy stage 1 clutch kit with an oem t/o bearing replacement and had a machine shop resurface the flywheel. Im still the in the break-in process 350 miles in of granny driving. mods include tbe and aftermarket bov.

Starting around 300 miles i started noticing a judder when i downshift. Now its not a hard downshift like your passing someone. but a progressive downshift with breaking. i usually wait till 2k-3k rpms to downshift. Thats when it judders that i can hear and barely feel on the pedal and feel throughout the car.

The judder isnt a earthquake its a quick da-da-da then smoothness. Is this part of the break in process too?

Sounds to me like you're both getting used to a grabbier clutch. Removing the clutch restrictor pill inside the slave cylinder may also help.

The exact same issue happened to me after I installed the Exedy Twin Disc. It took me almost 2k miles to fully break in. It is better now but i still get the occasional random judder at take off in 1st gear or on downshifts to engine break. what you will find very helpful is to rev match or blip the throttle every time you downshift and that should take care of the shudder problem.

Thank you very much!! I will try and rev match as close as i can. i noticed that if i downshift while the rpms are higher than what im used to then its very smooth. no judder are jumps. I love the grab of this clutch tho. whew.

Should i granny drive it for 2k miles tho? I miss full boost soo much and im at 470!

How hard is it to take out the restrictor pill?

Na, it took me longer to break in because I do mostly highway driving commuting to work and back. I would just do the recommended 500 miles as long as you did alot of shifting.

not sure if its hard to remove the restrictor pill cuz I had Ivey remove mine, but here is the how to link if you wana give it a shot yourself, doesnt look too hard.

you should upgrade to a SS clutch line at the same time. while your at it some other nice upgrades would be shifter bushings (underhood and shifterbase) and motormounts. I noticed a nice difference with the AMS street motormounts for daily driving.

Removing the pill isn't very difficult at all. A helper and some basic tools are all you'll need. I honestly wouldn't bother with a SS clutch line, but the shifter bushings and a stiffer front motor mount (check out the one made by Blox) would be a great idea.

Grabbier clutch guys, learn to Rev-Match downshift. If I didn't Rev-Match on my downshifts my exedy triple would shudder so hard.

I full boosted the second day I had my exedy twin, it should be fine, I have 1200 miles on mine now and its fine. Like everyone else has posted you rev matching helps everything.
