About Shortblocks

Well i am soon going to be around 450-500whp.. Im on a Stock motor and it is my Daily Driver.. With that being said im kind of scared of blowing my motor...

I know this is a noob question but im going to ask it anyways.. "If you blow your stock motor will you need a new core no matter what."

Depends on what happens when you blow your motor.Throw a rod out the side of the block then yes you need a new block. There are many ways to blow a motor.Going lean and frying a piston you should be able to reuse the block.Every situation is different.

Yes, short of "windowing" a block or scuffing the cylinder walls so bad they're unrepairable, you can typically reuse the block.

Yeah it all depends. i fried a piston and was able to use my block. just had to go .020 over bore. But on the other hand i have seen big holes in blocks from rod hardware failure and the rod shooting through it.

like others have said, it all depends on the extent of the damage. If you put a hole in a piston or fry the rings it can be a pretty simple fix all things considered, but if a rod lets go, which they are more likely to do at the higher hp/tq levels, you will more then likely be adding a window to your block. Best case scenario you can bore your block .40 over or .20 over or whatever, but worst case scenario....start saving for a bottom end now. On a side note, some insurance companies are really good/nice about paying for these types of mishaps, which is a plus.

what insurance company is going to pay for you modifying and destroying your motor? Don't ever assume insurance will pay. There are alot of evos running 400-500whp on stock block, there are also a lot of evos that have blown up their motors running 400-500whp. It is a risk that you should be prepared for the worse.

If you can't afford to do it right the first time, how can you afford to do it twice? No matter how you swing it, it is ALWAYS going to be more expensive to fix a destroyed motor versus a working one.

I've personally seen a check cut for a blown block by Mercury Insurance and while I agree that you shouldnt count on it, perhaps you can get lucky like that one guy with Mercury did, just saying. Now back on topic.

The only time I have seen insurance companies pay for a destroyed motor it was shop keepers insurance covering it. Keep in mind if you were able to do something like that for a private party you raise everyones rates. If you cant afford to pay for it and want someone else to, dont put yourself in the situation to begin with.

Oiling problems can destroy the crank and thrust and make an otherwise usable block nothing more than a boat anchor. A badly blown headgasket can jet the top of the block and head and make them junk.

cliffs- dont blow the motor up, just build it before it fails.
