boosting low

So, I did a search and couldn't really find a real answer, so I'll see if anyone would be able to answer it here..

I have a Evo IX and it's stock. I just recently installed the Defi BF boost guage and went out to test what my Evo is pushing.. I am reading that Evo's out the door is pushing around 19PSI..? With that, I am no where near that. My spike/peak is at 14PSI and drops to 13PSI.. Anyone know if this is normal or did I wire it wrong? Everything seems to be fine but 13PSI is pretty low!! Should I check for anything or am I just over-reacting? Any info would be great!

I don't know if all new stock Evo's are set at 19 PSI when they leave the factory. I do know that my particular Evo, which is a 2004 RS, came with boost set at 14 PSI from the factory... so it can happen. There are variances.

Definitely do a boost leak test. Also the IX's are known to leak at the throttle body shaft seals.

Agreed. Boost leak test will tell you where the leak is in the induction/charging system. If worse to worse since you have a boost gauge now, get a boost controller and start tuning for a little higher boost.

Try and find your leak first. If you don't find a leak then something is a little fishy as IX's should come stick with close to 20psi of boost.

Hmm.. Yea, I guess I will try doing the boost leak test. It definitely seems that I am boosting to low.. Running 13PSI as oppose to 20PSI is a big difference, I don't know why there are so many mixed answers.. I guess I'll try doing the test tomorrow.

+1000 on the boost leak test. Check your hoses where your boost gauge lines goes to and from for leaks.

When I bought my Evo and installed a Boost gauge it was reading 14-15 psi. After reading and reading and the help of the forum members I finally fix the problems.

  • 1rst I did a leak test and found a bad diverter, (change it) but still the gauge didn't past 15psi.
  • The major problem was that the cat converter was clogged, had to took it out and cut the inside with a pry bar. Then the car will boost all the way up to 25psi.
  • Found that 25psi wasn't safe, so I bought a MBC and set it to 22psi.
Hope it helps.

From the factory is should be running 19.5 tapering too 16.5lbs. I had a problem with mine where my WG actuator diaphram when bad. I would boost all over the place but always lower that it should have (sometimes 17 dropping 13, others 15 tappering to 12),

I would do the leak test, if that doesn't turn anything up, look into the actuator.

Good Luck.

if you dont have a MBC you should deff. get one anyway, so at least you can adjust once you figure out if its leaking or not

Thanks for the responses fellas. I will take note of all that was mentioned. I do have a Greddy RS BOV but other than that, it is stock. I will go out today and check my lines.. Hopefully, it is what I am thinking it is and nothing more.

Update:

Did a boost leak test and found some leakage in the lower IC pipe. Fixed it and ran car.. Still boosting at 15 and dropping to 14. Swapped out stock cat w/ a test pipe, still boosting at 15 and dropping to 14. Since those didn't work, I think I will be trying to see if my actuator is bad... Any other ideas/suggestions if this doesn't work??

isnt factory wastegate pressure between 13-15? it is possible they had a mbc installed and removed.... might be missing wategate pill and solinoid connection.

This is INCORRECT. Boost was not 14lbs on an 04 RS from factory.

Here are the stock boost specs.

03-04 (all models) - 19.5lbs

05-06 (all models) - 20.5

If your seeing 11-14lbs,. then your on wastegate boost and something is wrong with your boost solenoid or other form of boost control (MBC, EBC)
