Make sure the tension is setup correctly and remove the gold sprocket on the oil pump to install the new balance shaft, DO NO I repeat DO NOT remove the gear that drives the oil pump. This Thing is UBER tight and the only way to stop it from spinning is to use the balance shaft, doing it this way puts an extreme side load on the drive gear inside the oil pump causing it to gaul into the front case.

Slighlty above and to the right of the timing belt pulley on the front cover you will notice a gold sprocket/cap remove that to access the bolt holding the driven gear of the oil pump to the balance shaft. Once the install is done fill the oil pump with assembly lube.

I would personally recomend the stubby shaft.

It sounds like in your case it was not the race shaft that caused your problem. I have had Mitsu cover a front case housing in the first 12 months of purchase. At least this saved me from purchasing a new front case/oil pump.

The gear your talking about you couldn't remove because it would cause no oil pressure.

Overall just trying to understand your overall justification to stay away from the AMS race shaft....

I think he's saying not to remove it while installing the balance shaft. Having just done this job, along with my own engine build, I can't figure out what the balance shaft bearing would possibly do to stop the oil pump gears grinding into the housing. It doesn't stop the gear from moving front to back in the engine in any way. I can't see it hurting, but I can't see it helping either.

I was saying to remove the gold sprocket to install the balance shaft/stub shaft. some people remove the timing belt pulley from it then all the screws that hold the pump to the front case to do the install which is incorrect.
The part that fails in the oil pump is the front case, timing belt tension pulls the steel shaft on the drive gear into the case. The balance shaft /stub shaft/race shaft is attached to the driven gear of the pump hence there is no way it provides any *extra* protection for your pump. When I ordered mine I was under the impression the AMS shaft had something on the end of it to prevent the spreading of the gear causing the gears themselves to wear into the housing, this however is not the case nor a common way for the oil pump to fail.
