Another question is do they Also fix the inpu shaft issue? My whine is getting consistent coming from the transmisson. I might need one in a few months. Any luck on getting a hold of them for some answers to these questions, and a price?

I was actually thinking of doing a built 5speed swap until I saw this thread when it first pop'ed up I emediately called Shep to find out the new's think it's gonna be a great option for the 6 speed guys. Just alittle background I mainly use the evo for Drag racing and now I can't shift into 5th quickly anymore takes a slow shift to get it in, I guess that's what happens when you bang it run after run. I e-mailed shep about testing this out because as of right now shifting to 5th just won't work. Gonna try and run through the traps at 8700 next time out I know i know alot of you may think i'm crazy on the stock motor but I know it's a little off topic but what would 8700rpm equate to in terms of mph on the 225/45/17 BGF drag radials. Wish I didn't have to do this but don't have a choice right now as the event is gonna be on the 11th of next month.

Not sure about your question, but please let us know if you do get to test it and how it performs. Also price if he gives you an estimate.

Heck, I'd let my car be a guinea pig. Can't be any worse than the stock 6 spd.

My thoughts exactly. I just want to do everything at once when I build my motor. It would be nice to have a viable solution now. I don't mind spending a little cash to tr something in the final stages of it's trial than trying to keep rolling on this whining input shaft. Then it's double the labor and / or aggrivation down the line when it blows and you have to pull it out again.

Agreed. A friend of mine, who is the local mitsubishi tech and friend of Shep, said that he only has one gearset available now, and it is going into his drag car. I asked to see if he could get any other in within the next few weeks for my build, and he said doubtful. Looks like I have to shell out to make the 5 swap now....

I will miss the 6, that is for sure.

I already made the dreaded plunge into a 5 speed too. I couldn't wait any longer.

LCEvo; it is not that the 6 speed is a bad option, it is great, it just can't handle what some people do with their cars. I mean, honestly, how many drivetrain parts on other cars can handle twice the amount of torque than they were built for? Not many. Also it is just a matter of space constraints. There are 6 gears in the same spacial cavity that there are 5 with the other transmission. That means a few things; 1) the gears have to be shorter or narrower, 2) You can't hold as much fluid to cool the entire transmission down, as more space has been taken up by your gearset, 3) The input shaft just gets more wear and tear than the other gear set leading to premature wear on it and its bearings.

When I went to talk to Shep about my transmission build I asked him a couple questions about the 6 speed upgrade. He was just to the phase of putting it in his track car, so I was misinformed when I said it was already installed. I asked him wether or not he would order more if there were a steady demand, and he said he wouldn't unless there is time to show that they can be trusted and their performance is proven. That is very understandable, as Shep is by FAR the leader in drivetrain builds for the 4g63 (among others) and doesn't want to put his name on anything that isn't absolute quality.

When will it be marketed? No one really knows? I would say maybe by the middle of this summer, when they have completed enough track passes to be satisfied. Another thing is that hopefully they solve all of the issues with the 6 speed and not just the gearing. Oil demand, input shaft, etc. There is a long list of problems and a rather short list of solution choices.

I still believe there is an incredible market in the 6 speed upgrade process. Almost 1/3 of our cars came with 6 speeds from the factory and all of them are looking for a way to make their drivetrain better. It is just a matter of time before someone comes out with a reliable remedy to the problem, and whoever is the first to market it, will make the most off of it by far.

As asked that exact question. The answer was simple. The STi transmission case is MUCH bigger than the EVO. Therefore they can put in beefy gears. Mitsubishi scrimped on this for some reason.

Hopefully he gets it to the point where he's ready to start selling it soooooon.
