4th gear spins free like neutral.. help?

Okay so I have a fully built transmission and Exedy Twin disk and a ralliart diff all with about 4200 miles on it. I've done a lot of searching and not found the answer to this problem on the Evo so I figured it was time to ask (new to this forum, not all forums :P). I just recently purchased the car and I knew that this was the problem before I bought it, and I had confidence that the deal was still sweeter than this could sour.

So what happened was the old owner had downshifted from 5th to 4th, and shortly there after, the RPMs just sky rocketed through the roof like it was in neutral. Every other gear works fine (except 3rd gear syncro going out..) but when put to 4th, its a free spin.

He said there was absolutely no noise when it happened, just rpm's going up all of a sudden. What could this be?

EDIT : This is the 5 speed transmission.

in 4k miles with no noise though? It may just be me, but a built transmission shouldnt shred off all the teeth in 4k miles

It goes in for certain, not just feels like it goes in part way? A built transmission doesnt always mean the gears themselves were replaced at the time of rebuild. Sounds like it needs to come out, and at the very least have the gear oil drained and see if there is debris in it. Know pretty quick when the drain pan looks like you were panning for gold.

The car feels like it goes fully in to place.

^^ yup X2, sorry mang. As was said, a "built trans" doesn't always mean that everything was done. It's just like saying you have a built motor, there are many different parts ...etc

4th gear is missing some or all teeth. We are rebuilding one now that had three teeth come out of the transmission drain hole.

Sounds like you need it rebuilt.

We offer driveline services to EvoM members on our in house 5sp transmission service.

From standard repair and rebuilds to custom gear ratio changes, we've got you covered. Most transmissions received, repaired, built and turned around within 72hrs of receipt and back out to FEDEX / UPS for delivery.

alright I looked and couldnt find it anywhere lol. How much would you charge to do a new 3rd gear synchro and build 4th if the teeth are stripped?

I dont think anyone would just do one synchro. Your gonna have to do a basic rebuild with a 4th gear on top. Its probably cheaper to get a used tranny.

hmm. Well shep quoted me a price for the single synchro. since all the other ones were just put in 4300 miles ago I would hate to do ANOTHER rebuild on the whole thing this fast. Especially when all I need is 1 synchro and a gear

Ya in your case since the trans in relatively new, i doubt you will need all new syncros. I'm sure shep can hook you up/
