Transmission install tips?

Tomorrow i will be taking off my tranny for the third time since i installed my new act hdss. The first time i took it off was to change to a more street-able setup, from a QM to a ACT. The 2nd time i took it off was because it was slipping really bad for some reason and third time which i am going to take off again tomorrow is because the wedge collar is not holding the tob.

My question is, is there a way that we can get the tranny in smoothly? It takes me hours and hours doing it with just one jack and manuevering it to line up correctly. I am thinking i should get an atv jack or something, maybe that would help.

I have tried pulling the engine far forward as possible, lowering it and it still hits the subframe.

Angling the tranny 90 degree then as i get it in there i slowly wiggle it back into place seems the work best for me. I dont know how people are doing it with 30 degree angle.

My uncle manage to get the tranny in within 5 min just using one of my jack and the 90 degree angle. But its hard for him to come by.

So any tips or hints? Better jacks i know for sure.

Yeah i followed that writeup. The first time i did it, it took me like 5-6 hours to get to the tranny. Now it takes me like 30min to get to the tranny and 5-6 hours to put on the tranny.

did you try using a ratchet strap form the turbo to the rad support? If you have to, take the rad out, i got it with almost no angle at all by myself. The key is getting the engine forward and down. What are you using to support the engine when the tranny is out? I use an engine support bar from harbor freight. With that thing you can lower the flywheel side of engine with it pulled forward. Also loosen the subframe, you want remove 3 of the 4 bolts holding it. Just leave the one closest to the driver in but loosened up as much as possible.

take out all the subframe bolts but one on the pass. side. Will effectively drop it down like 4-5 inches and give you tons of room to slide the transmission in

Use an Engine Hoist/Chain Setup to help you get it in/out. This method has cut hours off times for a few of the locals.

Agreed getting it out is not too bad its getting it back in that kills.

The first time I did it I broke my TOB retaining collar I then had to pull the tranny and start over like 3 times

the key in my opinion is plenty of support under the tranny and perfect input shaft alignment.

Get the motor as close to the radiator as possible. Lower the motor to get trans in its "area" raise up the motor and get the trans into place.

What worked best for me was basically bench pressing the tranny (or pretending I could) while a friend helped stabilize from below and another friend guided from above. Wasn't much fun but worked...

I have a chain fall hoist ($40 at Menards). On my DSM, if I reversed the motor mount on the transmission and attached the hoist at that point, it was at the center of gravity on the transmission. So, no need for jacks or a second person and I could wiggle or angle the tranny as needed.

Where should I attach the hoist on an Evo 5-speed?
