Evo 6 will work. 7 or higher will be better.

Do you intend to have a tuner look at your car or will you be tuning yourself?

Also: Where in NZ are you?

That's fair enough, getting a tuner can be pricey too. Maybe start reading up on ECUFlash.

Not quite. The evo 4 ECU (as far as I know) can not be re flashed. An ECU out of a newer evo will allow the ECU to be tuned and modified. So:

1. Upgrade ECU

2a. Buy evoscan cable and everything else needed to tune, download ECUFlash for free and research.

2b. take car to a good tuner.

hahah sorry man iv kind of hijacked your thread!.. i think in all honesty it could be my problem as the car runs ok uses alot of fuel and has a pop and fart in idle and jsut before had sweet f#$k all power on start up nearly stalled a few times but iv been driving a Honda for last week or so.... buy evoscan and get the software to and then we can both put some tables up of fuel timing and so on any error codes. it will only cost about 100 for software and cable plus its kiwi made so its good "P

blade. change your plugs!! i changed mine to ngk iridium ix's and presto the rough idle and engine rocking gone!! but now my cars cutting out randomly when on turbo timer or sometimes when driving also nearly stalling! my idle screw is set wrong i think idling not at 850 900 more like 1000 and then when really hot 850 800 then boost of and slow down it nearly stalls never had this problem before

no i tryed an evo 6 ecu done nothing but i never had it tuned so might have been that. i think its the fuel pump that's making it do this as the other day it was really low not on petrol light but low and it made engine light come on and spluutered and nearly stalled a few times then engine light wouldn't go of so im guessing ill replace that next with walbro 500hp unit

A misfire with vacuum fluctuation usually indicates a mechanical problem... I think you are dealing with a more serious problem.
