Clutch Suggestion

I have read through a bunch of clutch threads, but as my car is of course different from everyone elses, I was hoping to get a little personalized input.

My first thought was to go with the ACT HDSS. Seems like a good price and holds around 500 ft/lbs of torque. I hear the clutch is close-ish to stock feel and that is a plus as I daily drive the car. I would want to bring the car to the track once or twice to see what she was capable of on the build and other than that would rarely, if ever, launch the car.

I know the XTSS is another option, but I don't believe it would be as comfortable to drive as the HDSS and if I was looking to upgrade I might just make the jump to the Exedy Twin. Regarding the Exedy Twin, I am aware of the chattering and other issues, but it seems to be a great all around clutch and would probably suite me well... although it is twice the price of the ACT.

Here is my build:

Built 2.0
AMS Pistons
Pewter Rods
Knifedged Crank
ARP hardware throughout the complete engine.
ACL trimetal main/rod bearings
Balance shafts eliminated

Boost Logic SC61 Turbo Kit

AMS FMIC
SMC Meth Kit
HKS DLI 2
ARP Head Studs
GSC Cams 264/272
Vishnu Signature Exhaust
880cc Injectors
Walbro

Please post up any input you have

I don't know what material the HDSS uses, I've searched and cannot find it. I would recommend to stay away from any fully organic material usually found in full face disks. If going with ceramic bronze is too aggressive for you I would suggest kevlar like the Fidanza 3.2 prung 4 puck design. Kevlar grabs harder than organic material and returns to its natural state after being overheated and it does not glaze. This means if you drive it hard, launch, and overheated, you can still get after it again. Full face organics will glaze after an overheated cycle and is done, your clutch will slip under any added power.

You have a decent mod list. I would steer away from you choices and strongly consider a more aggressive kit. You don't have to go twin disk, but you may want to consider a fully ceramic clutch disk with a sprung design for some smoothness. They will grab hard. At the least, a kevlar material like the Fidanza 3.2 https://www.evolutionm.net/features/article.php?id=97

I love my quarter master. I would not put an act on anything more than a bolt on car. Why skimp out now?

The ACT uses a stiffer pressure plate to increase the clamping load. It's not the way a clutch should be made. It came with my car when I bought it and it is annoying to drive due to the pedal pressure.

Exedy Twin seems like a winner. After further input, I have gathered the ACT will not hold for long.

To the OP....give the Competition Clutch twin-disk a try. It's a pull to push conversion style as well. I'm thinking this will be my next clutch. It's also affordable.

well heres my two cents.............just got my exedy twin installed today and heres what i think, first chattering, i can barely hear it at all! clutch pedal is a little stiffer than stock but not by much, its just a nice solid feel.

as im moding my car more and more, i thought i would never say this but, driveability is becoming an important factor just as much as performance. the exedy twin i really daily drivable, quiet, and easy to drive.....i didnt want to join the exedy bandwagon but i think its truely one of the better clutches for majority of the street driven evos. hope that helps!

Thanks for the review, this is great to hear seeing as I just purchased an Exedy Twin with SS Clutch Line, OEM Throw Out Bearing and STM Clutch Fork from SBR. Thanks Marti

Cannot wait to get it installed and see what this build can do.
