Yet another transfer case whine thread...
Hey Guys,
Forgive me for creating another thread about transfer case whine, but after reading and reading, I'm still concerned about my particular problem and wanted to see if I can get some help and advice.
Shortly after modding my 04 GSR (like literally 3 or 4 hours), I started to notice what many would believe is the infamous Evo transfer case whine. I immediately researched to find out what the noise could be and many suggested 100% it's the transfer case. I'd like to list the symptoms I'm experiencing and see if you guys can agree, that I am one of the many with the whine problem.
1) Whine happens loud between 20 - 40mph and between 60 - 70mph
2) Whine only seems to reach it's loud or noticeable points when my foot touches the accelerator. Whine seems to quiet down alot if I release my foot from it.
3) If I place the car in neutral when deccelerating from say 40 + mph, and just use the brakes to slow down, the whine is very loud and sounds like a decreasing firetruck siren noise. Note, if I keep the car in gear and decelerate with brake, I don't hear this noise.
Here is a video of the noise while on highway:

Here is a video of the deceleration noise (not great I apologize):

Any help guys would be greatly appreciated. I just want to be sure it's definitely the xfer case before I go spend 1300 on a rebuilt one + labor to put it in.
Thanks!

It's the TC; you can also drain the fluid to double check.
IMO to save yourself future headaches just have it rebuilt by Shep. I had mine redone and it's holding up pretty well.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I've already tried to drain the fluid and change it. I put in the OEM Diaqueen stuff and it didn't help too much. I've tried to reach out to Shep and he said he's really backed up and says it's hard to find parts for the rebuild now.
I was thinking about trying to find a used Transfer case for cheap (800 to 900) and then have it shipped out to TRE for their "refresh" job, but then I'm putting my trust in the fact that the used unit has pretty decent ring and pinion gears.
Alternatively, I could spend $1300 @ www.karking.com for a rebuilt transfer case that has a brand new ring and pinion, and still send it out to TRE for the refresh. They offer the refresh for about $325.
I dunno... what would you guys do? Go used, or go rebuilt?

I'm glad I had mine done last month then!! When mine went I looked at it like this...... A used one is about $900 if you leave it alone obviously you taking a risk and for $300 more you can have it refreshed = about $1200. So I sent it to shep and for $1500 got a stage one which is new pin, bearings and bigger stronger gears and if you want for about $500 more you get a LSD and bigger bolts.
WOW

My transfer case is acting the same way as yours. It wines the same way when I step on the gas and nothing when I'm off the gas. But two weeks ago I had to change my clutch and then notice there was no fluid in it. I haven't receive my clutch as yet but hope the noise goes away when I get back on the road... Please check your fluid.....
^ That's what happened to me, my fluid got too low, sorry but pretty much once you hear the noise your S.O.L. If you're a lucky person maybe it'll be ok but I wouldn't count on it. If I was you since you pretty much have it off or do then send it somewhere and have it refreshed or rebuilt because I'm telling you you're going to be taking that thing right off again!! And to the OP I just called and sent it around the begining of feb. and they said it would be two and a half weeks and that was pretty much what it was!! Oh and I didn't have another car too so lucky I was able to borow my brothers 92 jetta diesel only good thing about it was it got 43 mpg!!!!
