Question Motec vs. Gems - Best for Street/Track/Ease of Tuning

Between the Motec M48 Pro and GEMS ecu, which is the easiest to tune for the Evo? From what I've seen. the Motec software is all DOS based and looks like a PITA to use, while the GEMS is really nice with windows that you can open and close to customize the look.

Also, I've heard that the Motec doesn't have any knock control... if so, that sucks Would using a J&S be a viable add on? I've also heard the Motec has a very fast processor which enables very accurate ignition spark.

Aside from those points what exactly are the main differences between the Motec and GEMS.

I've heard a lot of debate on these two, but I can't find enought points to know what exactly one does better than the other... down to the hardware and software capabilities, at least.

Thanks,

Mark

Based on what I have seen and heard, I would personally go with something like the TEC 3. I have heard it is pretty nice to use now.

It comes with nice coils, and good windows based software.

Russ,

What does the TEC 3 cost on average? Any advantages/disadvantages.
I'm sure it's much more tedious to install, correct?

It is a little more manual work than some others might be, but it shouldn't be too bad. The crank sensor would the the hardest, but electromotive is near to you. You might get them to make a bolt on one for the EVO.

Advantage is it has powerful ignition already built in.

I think it costs more than others. Maybe even in the $2K range. I can't see any disadvantages. One guy has used it on DSM's with great sucess. I think several use it on the WRX too.

Might look at the AEM one too, but don't think it is as powerful.

A lot of domestic guys going to Fuel injection use the TEC 3.

You shouldn't look at the M48 Pro anymore, but the M800 which should have all the features that you mentioned, I believe. But check for yourself at www.motec.com.au

KK,

Are you going to map this yourself? Or is somebody going to do it for you?

Someone would do it for me initially, but I would like to learn at the same time so I can be able to re-map in the future.

i don't think its that easy to learn. also, if you mess up the map, you run the risk of blowing up your engine.

i am currently running a mine's ecu but am looking at getting an autronic unit (only because that is the only brand that i know of that is supported where i live).

good luck with whatever you decide to get
