Before I make my clutch purchase...

...I would like to get a few opinions, preferrably from those with first hand experience, about a few different clutches. My setup is a full, top to bottom, buschur build (block, head, 6262, etc etc) and I'm trying to decide on what clutch to purchase. I'm leaning heavily towards a twin setup vs a triple as this will be a street car and I dont particularly want a solid disc and would prefer a sprung. From the various Stickies and other threads that I have read both on here and other evo forums, I've narrowed my choice down to the exedy twin carbon d-core. My setup will be ran mostly (99% of the time) on 91 octane but I'm having a racegase map tune done as well on either Q16 or MS109 and that will put me at around 500wtq and 7-800whp. This car will never see the drag strip or track and will be purely a highway car, so my question is will the twin carbon hold up for me or will a cheaper clutch such as the exedy twin HD suffice? Money isn't really a concern...I just dont want to do things twice and end up buying a different clutch setup down the road and I want the best possible street manners that can be expected out of such a clutch. Thanks.

-Ben

I don't make as much power as you will, but I run an exedy hd twin and love it for a dd.

Yeah, I really like the exedy twin HD as well and the wasabi/hd is rated at ~550-600wtq so it might be the best option.

I've driven an exedy triple and wasn't a fan of all the chattering vs an exedy twin. That being said, who knows, maybe a triple is the best route.

I started out with the twin HD and wished I had just done the tripple as I have to upgrade it now I do quite a bit of launching though so I'm sure that had something to do with it. IMO your build sounds pretty serious, I wouldn't want to skimp out on one of the baddest evo clutches there is because of a little chatter. Could have also been an issue with that particular unit if it was glazed or something like that.

Tilton 7.25" Carbon Twin.

The Exedy is a 9" diameter clutch...which won't shift as well as the tilton.

Triples won't shift as well as twins. The Tilton Carbon Carbon twin can take all the power you're going to put to it.

If you like to shift quickly....carbon twin.

If you shift like a grandma and like doing burnouts and slipping the clutch until 40mph... go buy a triple.

The tiltons aren't really an option as they are pretty difficult to drive on the street. I've been in a less then desirable situation involving a steep hill, stop sign, traffic, and a tilton.

lmfao tell me about it..that is why I am in the process of ditching the tilton carbon for a exedy or os giken triple. Something I can enjoy more on the street as that's what my car mostly is.

Sorry I misread your post.

Carbon will not work for you. Period.

All the twins I know of are solid hub...not sprung. The best DD twin I know of is the Exedy Twin HD Cerametallic. It will work fine. I ran this clutch for nearly 2 years... best you can do.

Get a hold of Chris Egbert from NoLimitMotorsport and he'll get you the best deal on your twin.

Yeah, I'm considering the twin HD since 99% of the time I will be running 91 so realistically the max wtq that I'm going to have will be somewhere in the 400's...maybe even less (basing this off of mustang dyno readings). I figure the max wtq that I will be seeing on full kill mode will be perhaps 500. Also, this car will pretty much just be a weekend highway cruiser, so I think that the tq will be even less of an issue.

yes sir ben your right LOL. i have 3 exedy clutches on hand that i own lying around LOL. 2 exedy HDs and 1 exedy twin carbon in my evo now. if you want to rebuild my carbon exedy your more then welcome to and can have it lol, but form my understanding DDing a carbon clutch is not good as they wear extremely quicker. I would say get exedy HD and call it a day will handled alot more then people give it credit for
